I think the major issue at play here is that BioWare is staffed with pretentious hipsters that feel very insecure about their artistic credentials. It's why they make the characters ugly.

A person that is secure in their ability to create quality content won't make a female character ugly on purpose to give her an illusion of depth, he or she knows that there is no need to disfigure the character to make it "flawed", they can simply put some effort into writing a human character the audience can feel an emotional connection with.

What does BioWare do instead? They shit out "lol so quirky XD" Mary Sues like Sera and Peebee that look, talk and behave like they've come out of some Dreamworks cartoon but never get a dose of reality or a moment where they are actually humanized. And this doesn't just stop at extremes like Peebee, it's everyone. Does it bother anybody else that it's basically "Mass Effect - IN SPACE!", but they were already in space, so they had to go to another galaxy. I mean, what we've seen of the Milky Way galaxy in the ME games is less than .001% of the actual content of the Milky Way… and when you add in time the dimension of time (either prequels or far distant sequels), there is already infinite potential for storylines without being creatively bankrupt enough to go to a whole other galaxy - not only breaking physics beyond even what shit their lore normally handwaves away to have to get there - but breaking it even further in order to provide differentiation between Milky Way planets and Andromeda planets (otherwise, it's just the bog-standard Milky Way with unfamiliar aliens). It has to be alien and weird to a race that's so acclimatized to alien civilizations that they're even ok with buttsex, after a few drinks.

Also, how the fuck did they even find these "golden planets" before leaving the Milky Way? Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounded like they already knew where they were going and had things settled before leaving home - yet even if their ships can make the journey in 600 years, light only travels at the speed of light. Any data they could pull about the state of a planet before leaving would be almost 3 million years out of date.
