Reading requires at least some level of comprehension in order to understand the story, and if its written well enough you'll see the themes through the plot and characters. If you can't comprehend it there's no point reading it because you're just staring at words and not absorbing anything.
All that's required to play a game is knowing how to move and use the mechanics. You don't need to comprehend the story, and 90% of stories in games are utter shit anyway.
