From what I've seen, it looks like you can spin dash or at least do that midrun spin dash move in the Adventure games, while you get the boost just by wisps. So hopefully you spin dash but the wisp boosts are there so you don't break your speed or give you a chance to ram enemies.

Sonic (along with most genesis games) was specifically designed with that blending in mind. The developers of nu-sonic didn't know that, so they sloppily replicated the un-blended water.

Although now that you say that, that too was underdeveloped because of Last Story and many shitty missions.

The cutscenes at the start of each level would never change no matter how you got to that level, potentially invalidating something you just did unless you followed a certain sequence.

My favorite example is how Shadow teaming up with Tails to save the President makes Shadow decide he's an android out of fucking nowhere and he goes insane and tries to kill Eggman. Eggman had nothing to do with the level Tails was in.

I can see that. Though I think having all of the paths lets you see the potential outcomes for Shadow and "True Story" is just the one that's canon. It also makes up for the lack of additional characters in an otherwise singular story, for example Sonic Adventure.

Weren't the PS2 versions of Heroes and Shadow worse than the Gamecube versions? I will agree Shadow doesn't control favorably at times though I think that's just because Shadow was made on the same engine Heroes was. They shouldn't have dropped the SA2 engine.

Probably dropped the SA2 engine because they wanted multiplatform parity and maybe because SA2's was modified from SA1's which didn't run that well on the DC to begin with. PS2 ports also tended to be worse off in general even when coming from the DC (i.e Grandia 2 and DOA2).

SA2 is the best 3D game in the series. SA1 doesn't have nearly as good level design, and lacks the tons and tons of post-story content that Adventure 2 has, but gets by with neat adventure-game elements instead of action game elements.
