Pokemon: Generation II

Silver/Gold/Crystal versions are often considered the best generation of the Pokemon series.

However, I'm wondering if Japanese fans feels the same kind of nostalgia towards the game as Americans?

Maybe you should ask them

Japanese feel nostalgia only for the very first entries of all series of video games. Trust me, i know.

Amount of fanart per game on Danbooru:

...

You'd be right if you posted maybe 5 or more years ago, but the generation that played Ruby/Sapphire are now the internet going teenagers and thus it is now Ruby and Sapphire that is considered the best.
Gold and Silver were the most defining change in pokemon, moving it from a traditional RPG to almost its own genre. This was good and bad in many ways. The main thing that changed it was breeding, and the result that all pokemon had to have relevant abilities at all points in the game.

I can't moonrunes. Do it yourself.

Gen 2 is shit, literally only held up by nostalgia. It was a step up from the previous game, but not even close to the pinnacle of the series like most people claim to be.

Apart from the catching pokemon mechanic that has been in the game since gen 1, pokemon has always been a traditional rpg.

If you ignore nostalgiafaggotry then Gen IV is by far the best gen simply for the amount of content that gen gave us compared to previous ones. Even as far as just the main games go Gen IV was the best. Gen V is overrated dogshit, gen VI is shit, and Gen VII is actually pretty good too be honest

Gen IV, Gen II
Gen VII
Gen III, Gen V
Gen VI
Gen I

Emerald was the best pokemon game though. And best starting point together with Fire Red.

I'll be honest, ever so often I look up Holla Forumsshit and American vidya on there just to see the kind of shit Japanese artists make out of them.

Gen III is shit because it actually went backwards from Gen II, they got rid of shit like the radio and the day/night cycle. Gen IV brought both of those back to an extent (the radio as kind of been replaced with TVs you can watch though). And it had barely any content compared to other gens.

And what exactly did this add to the game?
It was so poorly explored in gen 2 that is really wasn't much of a loss.

They were.

Now it's Omega Ruby and Alpha Saphire calling the shots. Everything you liked from X/Y now in OR/AS. You want plot? You got plot. You want updated characters. you got updated characters. You want remixed music and kick ass graphics? you got it.

Now, let me be serious for a moment and address the real problem with Pokemon right now.

I don't care what you say about R/B/G/Y, R/S/E , X/Y, Double Penetration and S/G/C.

The Sun and Moon Children will be the most cancerous.
Hau& Gladeion are the worst rivals to exist. Even fucking Wally developed a spine. Hau?…Hau is like he's perpetually stoned and doesn't give a fuck.

Team Slav , despite having a silly theme and storyline are.. Jokes. I mean all the teams are ultimately jokes when faced against the MC, but Team Slav just spread their asscheeks and took it.

And then that terrible as fuck post game.
Whoptie fucking doo.
They wasted an excellent chance to do something with the other world.
You know, go through the portal , and you wake up at the start of your journey, except all the types are now reversed like in that machine in the other games.

But nah.
Here's the fucking Festival Plaza.

You're missing the point. Gen III cut content while barely adding any. The only thing Gen III was actually good at was its post-game but even Gen IV gave us a better post-game

Are you actually defending the Gen VI games while calling Gen VII shit? X/Y felt like an unpolished mess and ORAS are piss-poor remakes. Heart Gold and Soul Silver did significantly more to update the games world than ORAS did with Hoenn

Are you retarded?

SGC/Gen II improved drastically on Gen I's formula, and truly felt like a proper expansion of the world, especially by filling out the remainder of the Pokedex from the original games and by adding numerous mechanics like the day/night cycle and a proper statistics system, and so on.

The game did suffer from the very beginnings of rushed/filler pokemon designs, a less meaningful gym lineup and progression, and numerous smaller issues; but all in all the game had plenty of praise-worthy aspects.

I still think Gen III was the height of the series, both in art-style/cast and gameplay, though it started a terrible trend of streamlining past games' features.

Double Battles don't make up for the content they did cut in my opinion
Like I said, the only good thing it did was the Post-game, but even Gen IV had a better Battle Frontier. There's nothing Gen III did that other gens didn't do better. Thats why I put it in mid-tier

Based on porn alone, I believe Japan has a fondness for Gens IV (Lucario), V (Zoroark), and VI (Braixen).

I feel that HG/SS and ORAS are equal.
Both added and improved upon the originals greatly.

I couldn't pick between one if I had to.

But anyway, let me elaborate more. I was speaking regarding new players.
New Players won't go back and play the older pokemon games, so the effectiveness HG/SS had on the franchise will be lost in favor of the most recent remake.

reminds me of how black and white came out in 2010. an 8 year old who played those games when he was a kid is now 15 and shitposting about how it was good.

Yeah ok.
Gen 4 didn't exist at the time, why the fuck are you bringing it into this?
Not only is your logic retarded since each gen should be judged on what they added to the series, by the very same logic gen 2 should be low tier as fuck.

I'm 27 years old and started with Gen 1 back when R/B released, and have played all the subsequent games. Gen V is probably my second favorite, after Gen II.

I quit after Gen 4. Gen 2 will always be the best. If only because it lets you go to Kanto. What is so hard about adding past regions to extend the main campaign?

This, I think Gen V has more of my favorite pokemon than any other except squirtleline.
Probably helped by rolling a shiny adamant tepig right off the bat.

Can't deny the waifubait gets better every generation though..

Gen 1 is much more of a traditional RP than Gen 2 and any gen following after it. I'm talking mechanically; early game pokemon that scale badly, super strong but tough to get/train late game pokemon, bosses with specific weaknesses, late game super skills.
Other games focus on this a lot less. Where they pick up their JRPG element is in story.

That was still a thing in gen 2, and continued to be up until I think gen 5 when you could get some strong pokemon early on.

Is this a joke? Gen IV is easily the worst on account of the lazy entries into the series and saying half of the national pokedex wasn't new isn't an exaggeration.

Certainly not to the extent in Gen 1, where Beedrill and Butterfree weren't ever meant to be used after level 30 (or even level 15 really), while hard-to-acquire pokemon like Alakazam, Garydos and Dragonite were comparatively super powerful.

Every single gen has shitty regional bird/rodent/bug and a late game 600 bst pseudo legendary. The only thing that's changed is the pseudos have gotten shittier since gen 4.

Touhoumon is the best gen. And moemon close second.

Yeah, goodluck finding pokemon from future gens that evolve at level 10.

SIlcoon/cascoon also evolve at level 10, as does kricketot.

This.

Well you've got me there. I still feel the point stands that gen 1 emphasizes this much more than later gens. In later gens your early evolving pokemon still have abilities that keep them relevant at late game, while Beedrill is lacking and Butterfree is outclassed.
Beautifly's stats are so similar to Butterfree that its practically retreading the same ground.

I'm glad Beedrill got a mega even though megas are poorly implemented in general.

Man I can't wait to see how Gamefreak will fuck up Pokemon on the Switch, So much potential to finally properly flesh out the world of Pokemon, but you know they won't do it.

I guess I should look at Gen IV then, but if Diamond and Pearl aren't better than Gold/Silver I'm going to kill you.

Fuck Gen III

What do you hate about Gen III user, just think about all the wonderful regions of Hoenn you got to experience

Everybody knows that's big dick bee.

If Pokemon Switch is good, I think I'll have to pick up the console. So, it's a blessing in disguise if it's shit.

It's a dissapointing, inferior sequel to Johto, that's all.
I wish they put more effort in the remakes

Pokemon Switch.

Diehards will flip their shit. Newfags and normals will celebrate.

Just another Pokemon Stadium. That's all people want.

Is it really that hard?

Pokemon Stadium is on the Nintendo eshop though? I just want Pokemon Stadium 2 and the furret ball game back.

You mean another Colosseum/Gale of Darkness/Revolution.

That's what we want. Might as well kill two pidgeys with one roggenrolla.

Never ever.

I think gen II has the best music, and it was the best iterative version of all the games. Gen I was broken as shit, and gen II did a lot to address the problems while also adding new features. It was the first time shiny pokemon were introduced. It was the first time a day and night cycle was introduced. It was the first time you could travel to a previous region. It introduced dark type pokemon, to give faggot ghosts something to be weak against. It introduced berries and other held items and apricorns with which you could craft specialized pokeballs. It payed homage to the previous game's antagonist by making him a motherfucking sage who lives in a dark, dank cave filled with some of the strongest monsters in existence. It introduced rematch battles with NPCs you've already defeated.

It was just an overall improvement and a great game. It felt like an actual effort to create a better product, and not just a cash grab.

Gen V is easily the best gen, and i say this as someone who's played since gen 1 and used to think gold/silver were the best.

Best OST

Only because of Black 2/ White 2

...

Is it bad that I want a starter to be Fire/Fairy?
I want it to be a bull based off of Mexican pyrotechnics
Mega Tauros is fine too.

I want to make my own region so bad.

alert the media

17 years, seventeen (17) years

I've played Pokemon since R/B days and Gen V is the best

Fully fucking agree.

Are you saying you just realized this?

Do you guys think an Ophanim can work as an ultra beast?
Physic/Fire is a good type, methinks.

When did this turn into a fake poke competition?

GSC really is the best. Sure, other gens added "content" but they were worse in the important things.

The rivals in all later gens are just terrible. I mean, you just don't care about them at all, but you did about the asshole Blue and thief Silver.

Pokemon from gen 3 up simply learn too many moves. It just destroys the whole idea of catching pokemon, since you can just smash everything with your starter, who now has strong STAB moves and coverage early on. Impossible in GSC. You're not getting past Miltank without Geodude or Machop, and later on, all the starters have their own problems.

But the pinnacle of GSC was visiting Kanto, plowing through the weak-ass gym leaders there, and finding that there is just one challenge ahead. The guy you created one generation earlier is there, ready to show you who's boss. It was just greatly executed, no other generation comes close.

I could go on, but you get the idea. There was just more passion in gen 2.

Man I only ever played there to get all the trainer xp and the items, I never cared enough to picture the entire thing in my mind or look for an overview of the area

Wally and May/Brendan were implemented okay.

Pokémon makes my 'tism trigger. I like to get c r e a t i v e.

Its fun.

By the way they did a good job with battle music on the remix but the rest range from alright to completely missed the tune

Go Crystal or go home.

If anyone wants the cleanest version of the HG/SS Soundtrack, then look no further.

No buzzing, no cutouts. Just the cleanest audio from the game without any funny business.

Personally, I think it's the best from any remake. ORAS is the one that completely shit the bed.

ITT: Nostalgia fags who don't even know what EVs are.

It's not like the new games don't let you improve EVs and IVs.

genwun was the best gen.
the only reason to play pokemon is to be with your bros from genwun again. that's why sun/moon was pretty good since it has more genwun mons the new ones

Every game let you improve EVs

*In mini games without specifically grinding out wild pokes.

Sun/Moon is eh

Wow, you know absolutely nothing. No, that was not how it worked. Jesus Christ, I hate it when retarded people who know absolutely nothing try and correct someone who knows what they are talking about.

Fucking what?

Also that minigame in Gen 6 is the worst way to raise EV levels, the actual child's way to do it.

user, he's autistic. He doesn't know.

Sounds like you misspoke and are confused. I never said that wasn't the way to raise EVs, I just said back in the old days there was no stupid mini-games to do it.

Follow the conversation thread dipshit.
(me)
(me)
Hint: The Asterisk means I'm correcting myself.

So, yes, the old games didn't let you super train or whatever it's called with mini games to improve EVs and now IVs. The new ones do. Stop picking fights over literal nothing, you stupid motherfucking faggot.

FIGHT
FIGHT
FIGHT

It took 70 posts but this pokemon thread finally took its natural course

You're far too thin skinned user if you think that was picking a fight.

ok i have been trying emulate soul silver but it keep getting freeze at random i have tried the codes and turn off the 8mb memory option on desmune any suggestion to make it work?

...

Get a load of this faggot. Beat miltank with a ghastly with hypnosis + curse. I fucking hate nuzlockes

I never got this meme

It was a major plot point in Gen II along with the ruins of alph stuff. World building. It was thoroughly integrated.

Normal People weren't ready for Whitney.

Only the autistic who overlevered , those who actively traded and those who read the strategy guide were prepared.

Those who went in blind got wrecked.

Anyway. Rate my Miltanks.

whoopsie.

Not once as a child did I ever have trouble with whitney. But I guess it's rare for a child to have the mental capacity to know that rollout can be mitigated by protect and that leech seed+poison are extremely strong together. Or maybe I was just smart enough to not try brute forcing her with cyndaquil/pidgeotto/beedrill every time like a dumbshit.

I really don't understand what's so great about Gold and Silver. Is Crystal so much better?

I think I might actually complete the Alola Pokedex. Makes Shinies easier, and it's easier this time as well.

When most people played it they were around the oldest they could be while still being dumb children so it sticks with them the most and people here are too stupid to view things objectively.

But people did try to bruteforce it and to this day, is one of the funniest things to EVER happen to a large number of people playing Pokemon.

Alas, it will never happen again. Oh I miss popping on the forums and reading about bitching about Whitney. It wasn't even a meme back then, it was a legit issue.

I mean, fuck. It will never happen again. We'll never see such a large number of people getting butthurt over a gym leader again.

Also

You can sweep Whitney first time through by getting relatively lucky with a raging croconaw.
Setting up on Whitney with X-attacks is also an option, since you can buy them from the store, I believe.

What gives?

Gold/Silver is absolutely the best. Yellow is okay. I'm not interested in the rest.

I was like 10 when I realized that you can beat the game by just spending 10 or so minutes at the start grinding the starter from 5 to 10, and then just only using the starter for the rest of the game. It isn't even that hard of a strat, and if a ten year old can come up with it it isn't that fucking hard.

With Gen 2 there was this enormous step up in content and good content as well, there was a day/night cycle which introduced nocturnal pokemon, genders and breeding were added, and Dark/Steel pokemon were added, the continuation of Team Rocket was great, the addition of a phone allowing you to add generic trainers as friends was a nice touch too, and then the game blows you away by letting you access the Kanto region as post game content, and then gen 3 hits and all of that shit is gone, there is only Hoenn, there is no day/night cycle, there is no pokemon phone, instead you get secret bases and competitions. Gen 3s biggest issue for me was how much of a step down it was from Gold/Silver. It was such a step down that I stopped playing Pokemon until I picked up X and Y, which I thought had a bunch of cool new features like character customization but I didn't think was an acceptable advancement for the difference of 10+ years.

There's a fuck load of potential for Pokemon and Gamefreak just aren't tapping it, and I'm not even talking about moving the combat system out, the turn based combat is great and it works, just flesh out the world and add in more features that explore how you catch pokemon, require players to have to plan to catch certain pokemon, like some pokemon may only appear on misty mornings in this region, or are attracted to the scent of these particular flowers, so carrying them makes them appear, but details like this are scarce and require the player to talk to people within the world to figure out or just dumb luck will help them.

I'm not saying that your criticisms aren't valid but for all that was taken out there were other things added in. (for better or worse…)

It also seems your more interested in the overworld function of pokemon rather than the actual combat portion of pokemon which would also explain why you don't like gen 3

oh this one isn't in gen 3 but actually gen 4

Well now I remember, actually the additions were pretty good, even contests are of value but Pokemon is an iterative series and I don't see why content like the day/night cycle and the pokegear got cut, the Kanto region was excellent but obviously the work to get in previous regions would be immense so I'm not expecting it but nonetheless it was still a step down.

I like the turn based combat, personally I couldn't think of ways to really improve it, but I've only played 4 generations of Pokemon out of 7? With the combat being good I think GF should move into just detailing the world, and making the act of catching pokemon more involved, what would you do to improve Pokeymons?

I only didn't catch a Bagon, but I think GF could do a better job in making the act of catching pokemon and planning to catch them more involved

That's nice, I guess I should get back in and play the gens I missed.

You know I just realized that gen 3 does have a pokegear however it's not a story event you actually have to go out of your way to get it. So I can see how you missed the pokegear but it's in the game. Basically what you have to do is talk to Steven in the cave, he goes back to Devon Corps in the city with the first gym, and when you talk to him there you get the pokegear. Which does the same thing as gen 2 and even let's you refight gym leaders if they call you.

I personally don't know why the day/night cycle was cut out of gen 3 but gamefreak has this weird problem of introducing ideas and completely forgetting about them. For instance gen 2 introduced these "combos", for instance, if you use a Defense Curl before Roll Out, Roll out does double damage. They never really worked on this concept past gen 2 and abandoned it. They added double battles and even had a pair of gym leaders who did it in gen 3 but after that they didn't really do it anymore. Gen 4 they split day and night into morning, day, afternoon, and night. Then it was reduced spawn wise back to day and night for Sun and Moon. Gen 5 introduced seasons and then they were dropped. The same with triple and rotation battles which were used for only one gen. X and Y they introduced Megas but then completely abandoned them a gen later. (even making it impossible to get some previous megas because the required items weren't in Sun and Moon) They also introduced Sky battles, which was also left out of Sun and Moon. Now they introduced Alolan forms and Z-moves and I'm not certain what will carry over or not.

An npc calling you every 5 minutes to tell you they almost caught a pidgey does not add to the game in any meaningful way. A customizable base you can share with your friends implying you had friends does add to the game. This is not a step down.

You know, I rarely talk about them because most are flaming piles of shit but the pokemon fan game Pokemon Godra might be right up your alley. It has all pokemon available and 128 different starters. (No fakemon) But it also includes a job system along with having a bit more of a storyline focused on in game events and history. It may not be the best but it was definitely entertaining for what it was.

The reason I mention it is I like having the idea that the pokemon you start with not just being a choice between three but more like a personality test for what kind of pokemon would best fit.

As for combat. I am not certain how to improve it but Gamefreak is slowly grinding out new ways to have battles and it's rather nice.

Nigga don't cherry pick, and the other guy who replied to me already corrected me, it's been so long since I played Sapphire that I managed to forget that double batters existed and that the passive abilities and weather existed, and even then my main problem is the way that GF don't build on their games iteratively, good content just gets cut, because fuck it.

Damn, GF ain't moving as well.

I think 128 different starters is a bit much, but I will give it a look. I probably had the Pokegear I just don't remember it.

I'm not gonna lie, it's a bit much if you have to choose but much like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon I think it's fun to take a quiz at the beginning to determine what pokemon you would get. It's a little thing but I like it better than "this one looks cool!".

weather was added in gen 2.

You're implying too fucking hard, and I don't remember weather in Gold and Silver.

Rain dance,Sandstorm, and sunny day were all added in Gen 2

Without even looking it up, I know there's an npc on the route that leads to kanto that gives you sandstorm.
And I'm not implying anything, I'm stating fact. kanto was bland and empty with almost nothing going on. it only exists because gamefreak needed to do something with the space on the cart they freed up but it would have been better spend on making johto itself not empty as fuck too.

T H I C C

Code to get Mega stones for mewtwo on Sun and Moon

M2DESCENT
you still need to shell out for the pogeyman bank to bring mewtwo to S/M, if you have it that is :^)

...

There's litterally no reason to play GSC now, HGSS are the same thing but better.

Imagine it, Day/night, diving, waterfalls, base building, stationary and mobile planting, convenient egg hatching bicycle spot like the round city center in X/Y, bug catching competitions, amie, all the different poketreat minigames, pokemon move competitions, dressup for the player and the pokemon, different bike path styles, shiny detectors, different weather and seasons that affect the terrain, underground gem hunting, different music players in each town, different grass and tree types, apricorn balls, ruins you have to translate unown writings in, the slots, daily events at vendors, a pokemon follows you again, loads of postleague content, generous online trade filters, ALL of the pokemon in one game, and to top it off a dickish rival that's satisfying to beat like in the first 2 gens

Oh and I forgot, the hand radio/phone/number log for comfy calls for battles and from your mother, also being able to decorate your room

Gen II is the first game in the series. They had to cut their original concept into pieces, which is why Gen I and II feel so much alike compared to the relatively wild departure that was Gen III.

It was supposed to be one game from the start.

What even learns protect by then? Certainly not the starters.

The idea that you can get by with just the starter simply isn't true (in gens 1 and 2). Chikorita has it the worst, being owned by Falkner and especially Bugsy. It REQUIRES a Geodude or Zubat or something. Croconaw is a neutral matchup to Scyther, but Scyther is just stronger, so it needs to be overleveled to win. Typhlosion chokes against Clair and Chuck's Poliwrath (Feraligatr also doesn't like it).

The reason for that is - they don't have a second STAB, and they don't learn many coverage moves, so when something resists their type, they're screwed. So you need to catch pokemon of some other type to beat those. That is good design that is absent from gen 3 up.

In genwun that is even more pronounced, but it is flawed in other ways. G/S/C is much more polished, while still keeping all that made R/B/Y great.
