Star Ocean

Should i play SNES version of original Star Ocean or PSP undub?

Undub makes the 1st game look like the 2nd. If you are going to play 2 play the undub PSP version, if not play the SNES.

Yes, i am going to complete both first games, always wanted to get into the series from the beginning. PSP version then, thanks.

its better to watch the paint dry

mfw she has no almost no porn

I've been playing it via PSP undub myself. Pretty decent, but there's times where Square apparently either divided up the lines of dialogue differently, or outright added some, because there's a few instances of dialogue with the undub being English sub only and having no Japanese voicing to go with them in the track.

I might also say that, maybe I had the wrong expectations, but only having the ability to set two skills at once (I suspect this to be a PSP control scheme issue; apparently SO2 PS1 allowed for setting four, but the PSP version of it apparently once again only allows two, which are set on the shoulder buttons), full 3D movement, and just how easily your characters can get juggled around in combat, does feel slightly annoying. But I think I was maybe anticipating something like classic PS1 era Tales, given Tri-Ace had worked on some of those games before as WolfTeam. Again though, that might just be my own problem; maybe you'll have an easier time adjusting than I did.

Reminder that there's been an unusual attack on anything japanese related lately, its been to focused to be a coincidence anymore, its patently obvious some group is trying to stifle discussion of anything japanese related here, ironic given the origins of imageboards in general.

Don't fall for it.

And I'd suggest the older ones, the PSP ones make the terrible "LOL ITS JUST A GAME" plot twist and make it canon.

sssh he didn't get that far yet, fag

WRONG
play the PSX version

dubs confirmed. best fucking VAs

If you play the SNES version, make sure play it on bsnes/higan. Shit would become unplayable partway through the game when I tried it on zsnes in the past.

The SNES version is obviously unfinished and can be broken over its head
The PSP version is ugly as fuck with really annoying voice acting.

You sound a bit paranoid there, matey.

This is correct, the PSP version retcons some stuff and adds a character in to fit in with the later canon

Can;t you just use the same saves from zsnes to bsnes?

internal rom save files are the same as they are based on Ninty's standards (said standards also being why Byuu insists on not supporting .smc files). The save state files are different though

Emulate the SNES version of the original, play the PSX version of Second Story.

use SNES9X you niggers, instead of whatever autistic bullshit that sjw cuck byuu makes.

I knew emulationfags were autistic, but not retarded too

But I didn't say ZSNES

Alright, remove the fact he's too busy virtue signaling on what a good cuck he is and how he's blowing thousands of dollars importing rare PAL SNES carts to archive. bsnes is still a piece of unwieldy shit with its retarded system requirements and how needs to creates a duplicate file for every game you boot up.

Go ride Jamal's dick, cuck boy.

Only play the original PS version of 2.

I played the shit out of 2 on ps1 and never had 4 skills…how and when did you get 4 skills?

I don't know, it was something I recall reading in the past when I was doing some research into the series to see if it sounded up my alley though. First Departure is still admittedly the only one I've invested time in as of now. Maybe I heard wrong on it. Still, only having the ability to map two skills seems pretty damn limiting, especially when competitors like Tales were allowing mapping up to six artes at once by the end of fifth gen (between O+[direction] and the right analog).

Maybe I ought to do some more research into it and see what's actually true for SO2.

What happened to the PSP version of 2?

Found a manual scan for SO2 PS1; looks like you're right that you can only map two skills at once even with the PS1 version. Maybe it's the fact that the PS1 controller has more options or input (namely L2 and R2) than the PSP that made the idea of them allowing for more mapping of skills to make sense, and looking at the formatting of the "skill set" screen in the PSP versions, it seems as if there could have easily been room for more options to set things to (as if some had been removed due to less buttons to work with, considering I've heard FD was used SO2 PS1's engine as a base for the remake, or something). But again, it seems like a pretty limited form of mapping skills for easier use. Makes me wonder if that was ever changed/increased for Star Ocean 3 and on, or if those are still "two set skills only".

From what I've seen in threads, people really aren't fond of some of the art changes between the PS1 original and the PSP version, namely that the main girl visually looks a good bit younger than her PS1 incarnation.

Oh, forgot to add that people are apparently rather iffy about the change in English voicing between the two versions. And taking a quick look around, it seems like even in Japan they saw voicing changes between the PS1 original's JP dub, and the PSP version for SO2. I wonder what Japan thought of those voicing changes on their own end.

I remember one move usually got the job done. Claude could just ripper blast through most of the game or if u couldn't get close sword bomber and I don't remember using anything besides the ranged multifire on Opera(I think it was called a on 1 or something like that)

The best thing happened in my non opera-ernest save though. After getting his special ability in the cave of trials the useless piece of shit Ashton gets to stand in a corner yelling the almighty tri-ace over and over blowing up the screen (ps1 dub voices were great)

Get a better computer, spic.

I remember there being four skill slots in 3, but that was countered by having a point cost to set them. It capped out at something ridiculously low, like 15, with some skills costing up to 10. There might have been ways to up it, but the game was so boring I just rushed to the end and never played it again.

So after reading all the posts in the thread I get the impression that it's better to play the PSX version of the first two games, with an undub version like in Xenogears, if it exists. Am I wrong?

How can you play the PSX version of Star Ocean 1?

The first game is SFC and PSP only. Both games' PSP versions can be found with the JP dub patched in.

So play the first game on PSP then the second one on PSX?

That's what seems it seems like to me. I played them all but the 5th one but wasn't sure about the PSP 2nd having some issues. I recommend it because it looked like they improved the portraits and the voices, but I guess not. I liked the facts that they added character portraits for dialog boxes because it's so hard for me to relate to the tiny sprites. In this massive maps.

I'm posting images of the same conversation near the beginning so you can see the difference.

Just bought Star Ocean 5
What am I in for?

a slow and agonizing death

Disappointment and diaper pantsu from a director that was deeply concerned about the concerns of the western gaming press. Nip otaku sent it to the bargain bin within two weeks of release.

At least neither of versions are as butt ugly and soulless as the third.

I will never forget that travesty. They ruined Rena with that new-age moeblob look. I want cute and spicy Rena back from the 90's aesthetics!

The portraits during the dialogue were actually a pretty welcome addition though. Good change.

Its like she became younger with each new redesign.

Doesn't even look like her PSP version has her badass capelet. Fucking disgusting.

pre-owned at FUCKING gamestop for really cheap

I don't care about pantsu, I care about gameplay

Original looks better. Less moe-shit and the translation seems less fucked up.

Not if you bought SO5.
