Folks like Madoka since it's a deconstruction of the "magic girl" genre, but it's nothing special looking back at it now. Now studios adapt and create nothing but high school dramas from an LN. It use to be original works and more complex manga. Putting the technical aspects, such as animation or music aside, it's pretty simple what makes an anime good in my eyes: Characterization. I feel that's the single most important thing in anime.
See, that doesn't really matter, at least to me. I can appreciate a unique setting or story, but that's not a defining factor when it comes to determining whether or not an anime is good.

To take Konosuba as an example, what makes that anime great is how the characters interact with one another, while the story is incredibly generic, how the interactions between Kazuma and Aqua for example, play out is both unique and funny as hell. And in my eyes, stuff like that is what makes it good. That, and its comedic timing is spot on.

That still has animation and art direction 10x better than any modern shit.
