People are saying it's his best work yet.

I haven'y yet played Nier, will soon, but based on what people have been saying it's his best yet. Personally, Automata is now my favorite game of all time.

It's probably his best game yet. Platinum helped elevate it too. It took Nier's original gameplay and built on it exceptionally.

Considering his other games have an average of 5.5 on metacritic that probability isn't that hard to beat. How is the writing and gameplay compared to other plat games? How long is it?

It's Taro so it's generally really good. A lot of depression, twists and turns, insanity, depression etc.

You won't get Bayonetta out of it. In fact it's pretty much Bayonetta light. There's lots of customization with the plug-in chip system so you can have different setups and whatnot. Some of it is for stats, but you gain different abilities too, like the ability to get Bayonetta's parry (just called "Counter") as well as Bayonetta's Witch Time ("Overclock"). There are other abilities like being able to create shockwaves with sword attacks and whatnot.

But generally you have access to all combos and attacks once you have the weapons to use them. There are 4 weapon types. Small swords, large swords, spears and combat bracers/fist weapons. You can also fight completely unarmed, which is basically its own fighting style.

It's an action-RPG rather than a straight up action/beat-em-up. So leveling up and whatnot takes a bigger role.

Each character also fights differently. 2B is kind of an all-rounder. 9S sucks a little at fighting but he hacks enemies with quick twin-stick bullet-hell minigames. A2 is kinda like 2B but she can taunt and has a better dodge.

You also don't have dodge offset right off the bat but can acquire it later.

Ending A took me about 20-30 hours, including sidequests and exploring/dicking around.
Ending B is basically the beginning of the game again. Though less time if you did the sidequests in the first playthrough. So around 15.
Ending C/D is basically the entire second half of the game, and probably took me another 10 or so hours.

So all in all you're probably looking at a 40-60 hour game. Probably more if you want to 100% it.

Truth be told it's basically god of war's "press X key to do flashy stuff", so the gameplay is shitty and it doesn't have anything that made god of war good. People will praise it because of 2B's ass, because they want to fit in (they'll go with the consensus) and because it's japanese.
It's a shitty game, it's still better than anything that came out during the middle of this decade but that's like calling someone the smartest in a special needs class.

You need to do the kind of attack that propels you in the air, quickly cancel the attack right after it launches but not before the doublejump counter goes down(probably like 1 frame to do this) then doublejump normally

I've played all of his games. Drakengard 1 was the most frustrating repetitive shit ever but I loved how weird it was.

I played 2 but got kind of bored with it and never finished.

3 was FPS Drop: the Game. I did like Zero and again, how fucked up everything was, though in a different way compared to the first Drakengard. I really liked Zero, and I quite like Kaine. I just I have something for those types. A2 from Automata falls into that slot too. But more tame.

Nier is when I REALLY started liking Taro's work. The mediocre gameplay was fine, it was something that was way improved over Drakengard, and I prefer it to the crazy slowdowns of Drakengard 3. Plus it hit this sweetspot of fucked up stuff that I can't describe, and that carries over into Automata, which I'm going through again after getting all the endings and deleting my data to help others achieve the final ending. Platinum just helps elevate's Nier's gameplay from mediocre to really, really fun. It's no Bayonetta but the influences are there, and there's a little depth to it.

I'm actually playing it right now. I honestly love it so much despite a few nitpicks here and there. It might be one of my favourite games.

Mediocre gameplay. Fetch quests attached to A+ sidequest stories. Subtly fucked up shit/topics, weird but engaging plot.

Nier Automata tones down the fetch quests a bit, and mediocre gameplay is elevated to "really good" gameplay. Weird and engaging plot still there, A+ stories still there.

Also both games have fucking EXCEPTIONAL music.

I'm really mad at yoko for focusing on combat and gameplay rather than story and atmosphere which is why I loved nier and drakengard so much

Are you sure you're not wanting something exactly like the first Nier?. There's inklings of the first Nier there but it's different also. There IS atmosphere,

The city is lonely and melancholic. The amusement park is festive in a weird way (see the use of colours and how saturated they get compared to the city, with its more washed out colours and desert with its harsh light and desolation). Also the music is made to be somewhat unsettling in the amusement park, which combines with the visuals to make it feel odd.

The subjects of both games are also very different. I think Taro doesn't make games similar to his previous ones, just with references and influences (see Drakengard 1 to Drakengard 3).

I didn't think the Amnesia quest wasn't all that great either. It was pretty obvious from the start. But what about quests like 11B's memento? Or the Wandering couple?

Though maybe it just doesn't resonate with you? I love it and can see Taro's hand in it pretty well. The gameplay is just Platinum's shtick.
