I have an opinion that I think a lot of people here might vehemently disagree with, but I need to get it off my chest.

I think the Fallout games actually aren't very good. If they didn't have an interesting world, setting and story nobody would care about them.

The first two games haven't aged all that well. I played both of them to completion because I loved the world and the fact that it actually felt like an RPG, but the entire time I only learned to tolerate the slow grid-based gameplay.

Leading a BOS squad in Tactics was pretty cool, but the game was just an absolute mess. Trying to control like eight protags at once in a system I already found clunky was just too much.

Fallout 3's engine was, and still is, fucking abysmal. Everything feels like clumsy puppets with broken strings. It's just so buggy and glitchy and the whole thing has this broken, fake feel to it. Often I have to abuse save states or mess with console commands just to get things working. This is also a problem with New Vegas. Also, the graphics are absolutely atrocious. Everything feels slow and choppy, like it could break at any moment - and often does.

Fallout 4 looks much better and the gunplay is vastly improved, but it's absolutely terrible. It's basically the exact same game as 3, but with most of the vital elements of the franchise carved out, like some kind of terrible Frankenstein monster. Building stuff is fun, but if you don't have mods and DLC it's extremely gimped.

That PS2 spinoff doesn't even rate a mention.

Basically, I think all the Fallout games are highly flawed and the gameplay has never, ever been very good. If the setting and world weren't so interesting and cool I don't think anyone would play any of them.

everyone agrees.

Really? I thought at least someone would get pissed about what I said about the first two.

Whats so bad about BOS? It played like champions and was okay

No. I think people like 1 and 2 for what they represented and what they at least tried to do gameplay-wise (even if they didn't succeed), where the others were just generic open world shit in every way, even dumbing down the setting and story.

What do you think about new vegas?

Wasn't my cup of tea.

Honestly? New Vegas was easily my favorite to play, but I wish it had more combat encounters like 3 did. Fighting endless hordes of super mutants and raiders is good, dumb fun. New Vegas was almost too smart for it's own good.

Tactics is the best game in the series, hands down, without argument.

On point. Except the Fallout: Tactics part. Controlling the 6 "protags" at once is no trouble at all, since it's fucking turn-based.

You can switch between turn based and real time. I prefer real time.

Nice reddit blog, fag.

Is that Vault Meat?

Try a playthrough with only one character some time. There's a mission or two where you need to bring someone along to pull switches or some shit but you can dump them as soon as you're done.

Otherwise, you're alright OP. The first two had some really good writing and storytelling, and the roleplaying was fantastic. The gameplay bores me, but it's one of the very very few games that I would play for everything except the gameplay.

Most people only play the games for the porn. Wasteland is the better version of Fallout

No, you disgusting hunchbacked Shadfag.

It's called "Bobble Girl - with Slooty Vault Suit". Comes with blonde and red versions in normal Vault Suits or Slutty Vault Suits.

...

Vault Meat is cuter when people who aren't Shad draw her, actually.

Haven't played Fallout, user, but what you say makes sense to me.

For me atmosphere and worldbuilding is what makes me want to play a game, and I'll play games with shit gameplay just because the world is so cool.

You're missing half the picture OP.

You never said anything about Fallout tactics. You're also gay for not liking fo1-2

Is fallout a visual novel then?

Turn based RNG combat is fine. Fallout's 1 and 2 brand of it isn't. It isn't bad per se, it's that it's so contrived and limited that it makes for an unsatisfying experience, especially after you've played XCOM and Jagged Alliance.

There's plenty of games like that. Metroid Prime is just an okay console shooter, even a little frustrating but it had such spectacular atmosphere and music that everyone loves it. Deus Ex has a lot of neat gameplay ideas, but can't really execute them all. There's a lot of bad/mediocre skills and augs to take. It's far easier to just kill everyone and once you get past a point there's no repercussions for it so it kills the stealth aspect of the game. It's still beloved it creates such an amazing world. Hotel Dusk, Ghost Trick, and 999 tell great stories but are pretty much VNs. Despite all this there's still idiots on Holla Forums who will bitch that gameplay is the only thing that matters even though they love these games too.

It's an RPG, which is similar.

Honestly I wouldn't even say Deus Ex's world is all that amazing. Personally that game fell so totally flat for me and I have no idea why it's looked upon so highly, especially considering the developer's last game (Thief: The Dark Project) was not only a far better game, it still has the best stealth system ever done in a game.

Benis I agree aside form fallout 1, that game was pretty good back in the day

This is probably the dumbest thing I have read all day, "If the game wasn't good nobody would care about it!" I can tell from this sentence alone that you are a moron who thinks combat = gameplay instead of the gameplay being the whole package. Here's a hint, every part of the game is a portion of the gameplay, having an interesting world, setting, and story is part of what makes the games so interesting to play.
Not much farther in and you're already checking more boxes that show you don't really know what you're talking about. Saying a game hasn't aged well is not a valid criticism unless you can explain why. It's just a buzzword otherwise. People seem to think saying this, along with various other buzzwords such as repetitive or generic, means that you no longer have to go into detail or know what you're talking about. Just drop a buzzword and your post is golden.
When is this meme going to die? The gunplay is only slightly improved over 3/NV. It's still the same, feedbackless (until the enemy dies), slow trash it was in those games, only now you can aim slightly easier. I'm guessing just like when people say gameplay they actually mean combat, when they say gunplay they just mean how the gun controls instead of all the other aspects such as feedback, sound, animations, etc.

Ah, ok. Why didn't you just say you were a dumb reddit casual in the OP instead of wasting everyone's time

I agree with you, boss. I feel the same way about Fallout 1+2 that I feel about Planescape: Torment. Super interesting world, great writing, great characters, interesting plot and lots of hidden little things that I love in my RPGs, but the actual combat gameplay in both is balls. And that's fine. I can find flaws in the most highly revered classic games because no games are perfect.

Especially at the time they came out, Fallout 1+2 were huge sandboxes to play around in, and by the standards of the time and the genre, the gameplay wasn't really bad, though it obviously doesn't hold up now. Look at it this way: Fallout 1 came out before the original Baldur's Gate.

I DISAGREE

MOTHERFUCKER SAY THAT TO MY FACE NOT ONLINE SEE WHAT HAPPENS I GRADUATED AT THE TOP OF MY CLASS IN THE NAVY SEALS

I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT

them.
So if they weren't good, they would be bad?
What the hell is wrong with your logic here OP
They have aged perfectly fine, and the speed of the gameplay is one of the most common and easy mods you can do, it's literally changing a number in Textedit
Those games don't count. Nobody cares about the Bethesturds that carry the name.

I disagree.
Caravaneer (a game that plays like fallout) is pretty good, and it has almost no story, and a similar but relatively uninteresting setting and world.

FO1 > FO2 slightly > NV

Combat in any Bethesda game is garbage, kill yourself.
