When the current champ calls "new champ", the first poster to claim it is our champ. The first six legal Pokemon suggested once champ has been claimed or "new team" has been called will be the team our champ uses to battle. To be fair, he got a +20 Atk boost out of fucking nowhere when Gen 7 hit. That means mons that were 3HKOs are now 2HKOs. That means mons that were 2HKOs are now 1HKOs. Couple that with great speed and an ability that makes it so that you can't switch to the pokemon that you'd prefer to rely on to handle the guy.
What this ended up meaning in gen 7 was that stall teams can now turn a losing situation into a winning situation. If your main wallbreaker manages to kill one of their pokemon, they can choose to erase that pokemon from your team so you have no reliable way to break through anyone else. It's actually interesting how such a small change on the surface managed to create such a big change across the entire meta.
