It is heavily dependent on how the story is presented. If the story is presented entirely in skippable cutscenes, then you can ignore it entirely if you choose. Same with games that give you a bunch of fluff text that you can skip, then give you the objective in a menu for reference later. Unfortunately, that is both not a common practice anymore, and the practice of shoving dialog in your face during gameplay is more common.

I never watched Shinkai's other works, but from what I read about him, Children is what you get when you tell him to make a Ghibli movie. I feel that talking about the plot would ruin the sense of wonder which I think is an important factor in the experience.

I'm of two minds about it. While watching it, I could see all the sparks of brilliance, cut short by the most awful anime cliches. I left the theatre thinking it was nothing to write home about, but I can't stop remembering it all the damn time. Maybe my memory is just forgetting the cliches and remembering the good parts. I keep being hit by a sad sense of loss of something of unique beauty that was damaged beyond repair (you'll understand if you watch it). This is something I never felt with another work of fiction.

I wrote a mini review many, many threads ago, about how it has absolutely everything needed to make a masterpiece not only of anime but of all art, but Shinkai couldn't quite manage to assemble it the right way. Considering Shinkai's themes and talent, and the remit of this movie, it should have me crying unbridled tears of joy, but alas.

Regardless, I recommend it. It's a textbook flawed masterpiece. I feel it could reach its full potential with quite little work.

The book is "Healing, The Divine Art" by Manly P. Hall. It's very short chapter at the preface. The author is very serious kind of philosopher and never say any bullshit, not even by mistake.
