The way I see it, Valve software is a typical horizontal company that hit gold because some of the people that worked their happened to develop the right things, putting Valve into its dominant market position.

When they were working on Half-Life 2/Source, some folks probably thought "Hey, why don't we make a client that updates this game, and a bunch of our other games too? And maybe add chat since people who play one of our games generally play our other games. And we can advertise and probably sell our other games on there too!" and suddenly Steam was born. It's not a big step to make, and I can see some enthusiast trying to make a simple auto-updater into something great, creating Steam as a result.

Since they ran their own store, they did some research into how to make it less shit, and they got some good results too!
TL;DR: "piracy is a service problem", instead of trying to milk customers, win customers by providing a better service.

The only problem is that this stuff is all pretty old, and Valve has actually backtracked on many points:

There is of course the whole "paid mods" debacle, but aside from that Valve's greatest flaw is that they haven't made any improvement to their service and instead let it degrade.
I understand they don't have a choice in how cheap games get on the frontpage since the Publishers get full control over the pricing, but aside from that there's still plenty of fuckups.
Steam client still regularly locks up in cases like briefly losing your internet connection, there's plenty of cases where the client bugs out when browsing the store, and the client as a whole still needs occasional restarts due to games not recognizing it properly or matchmaking fucking up somehow.
These things aren't really excusable after so long, but Valve simply has made no effort fixing this shit.

I employ people mostly from Group #1 and am a member of Group #1 myself, but because Group #1's life experiences will likely be overall similar, there isn't much creativity because creativity is limited to life experience. Of course, there are differences physically, intellectually, etc.,but nothing too substantial. If I start hiring more employees from Group #2, who are about as academically qualified as people from Group #1, it will mix up things a bit. Not only is there more potential in this Group #2 candidate to improve my company with as they can help executives and myself understand unfamiliar markets and generate new ideas, but it also improves my company's public image on a domestic and international level like I support some social politics that I am personally indifferent about.
