Well, when making any game there are 2 branches of people
One branch is the programming guys
The other is the design guys
The programming guys are the people who make the engine and make sure the game is stable and the code is clean
The design guys actually write the story, make the characters, the models, the game world.etc
The programming guys are not the creative team, that falls under the design guys. Usually its the lead designer, in this case Gabe, thats credited with the bulk of the games creation, because games are still an art that requires the creative guys actually making shit. The programming guys just make the canvas, in a manner of speaking.
Some game companies are made up entirely of design guys and no programming guys, like Bethesda for example, which is why they are stuck on the buggy Gamebryo shit
Thankfully its a privately owned company, and not indebted to shareholders, or valve would already be as cancerous as consoles with subscription costs, pay online connections, and no steam sales.

My first PC was a 386 brought in 1989 and back then devs tried anything and everything but there was still very limited choice because you had to buy it off a shelf and no games got onto shelf's without a publisher.
As time went on and dev budgets grew publishers started getting more and more conservative about what they would back and wanted more control over the dev cycle.
When Steam first came along I fucking hated it, I loved HL1 and now some fat fuck is telling me I need a 3rd party program to play HL2? For the longest time I hated Steam but it was cheaper and had a much larger library than any of the game shops in my country.
Then Steam finally impressed me when I noticed more and more devs were self publishing without a publisher forcing them to do the same shit everyone else had been for the last 5 years.
While many will disagree with me I doubt many could make a solid argument against my claim that Steam removing publishers and Unity making engines affordable to small devs have been the two greatest things to happen to PC gaming in the last decade.
TL:DR - Steam has had a positive effect on the industry as a whole

Negative. Valve has a very unique system. Basically there's a pool of tasks/projects, and employees pick what they want to do and do it with very little oversight, iirc. Not sure if there's rules on time or whatnot. No middle management. Some people quit because they can't handle not having someone to tell them what to do. It's basically a company for people that like to take the initiative and get shit done.
A point to be made about this is that Steam the Content Distributor is actually separate from Steam the DRM. Both are actually separate components. It is usual that a game sold through Steam will have both, but not always.
That is actually a good way to run a studio as people put more effort in when they care about the project and by letting them choose they will pick the project they are the most excited about.

"Piracy is a service problem" is a great way of taking on PC gaming as a concept. People used to pirate games because bullshit like Starforce and Securom were making PC gaming worse. Bullshit like "You can only install this game 3 times", or "You must install this rootkit to continue" gave people a reason to not buy games. Then Steam came along, with the ability to download your games safely any time you want. You didn't have to put up with bullshit DRM, because Steamworks is barebones and nonintrusive. Steam was more convenient than piracy, and that's why it got big. GabeN was at one point a good guy.
Look what he's done since. Portal 2 had a cosmetics shop. TF2 went from a neat game with a great artstyle to a neat game covered in shit, with a ruined artstyle. Counter Strike ended up a gambling platform, where people care more about Gamebanana-tier gun reskins than the actual game. Half Life was supposed to go the episodic route, but then the episodes got delayed like crazy and outright abandoned. As for Steam itself, there's Greenlight, Early Access, the proliferation of key/crate systems and shit like paid mods. Remember how you could buy Steam games without worrying about DRM? Now there's Denuvo, and the other games that require you to have Origin or Uplay. GFWL used to be a problem too.

I played through the co-op campaign last night with a friend. We didn't laugh at a single joke. It was boring, repetitive, and the dialogue just made everything annoying.
Really isn't that good. Most games around that time did what Half Life did but better. The source engine doesn't work well and the gameplay is too floaty. The shootan feels limp-wristed and shitty.
Isn't good at fucking all. It does nothing correctly. 2004 was a golden year for Vidya but it wasn't because of Half Life. Max Payne and UT2004 were better.
