They called themselves that because Socialism was illegal in Russia. Social Democracy used to be a polite way of saying socialism, but today it is only used to refer to Social Democracy as butchered by the German Social Democrats.

One of the many triumphs of the Stalinist age was the killing of so many communists and opponents to the nationalist program. There's nothing to apologize for: they got what was coming.
