XCOM 2 was pretty good aside its hit/miss chances. Its literally the only serious problem of the game, and its easily fixable by mods.

What's more likely is that AAA games made by western developers just won't be made unless they will be guaranteed big hits with the ability to make endless bank with premium currency micro transactions. Everything else simply won't be greenlit.

Effectively, this will amount to a massive culling of AAA game quantities, and what makes it through will have a significant element of the game designed to accommodate endless micro transactions.

Deus Ex:MD is the perfect example of a game that tried to adapt mid development to this nw reality by adding on that Breach mode and adding a bunch of paid cheats, but the problem was that since most people weren't interested in that, it didn't generate money, and the single player wasn't substantial or interesting enough to justify buying it day one for enough people, so it bombed. They likely won't make another one, and if they do, I guarantee that the structure of the game won't resemble the other games in the series.

Much of this anguish around AAA doesn't extend to Eastern Europe and Japanese development due to how much cheaper labor costs are.

The future of interesting and engaging game development will come from those areas, as well as smaller AA studios and large-scale indie studios in the West.

Western AAA development is simply too expensive to justify all but the biggest projects.

Concurrent with your 10-year decline of vidya has been a massive shift in "entertainment" spending and ad impressions among young people away from movies and television. The vidya industry thinks they're going to capture that money as well as broaden their reach beyond young males, hence the colossal bullshit we've been suffering through for 10 years. They're basically burning other people's money with the promise of "we hollywood now". And it's not just the profit potential… it's the political and social power as well.

The shit wont work because young people pirate a lot of shit and watch Netflix. Video game "storytelling" is a retarded meme and pretty much a dead-end unless devs unfuck themselves and actually ask themselves "how can storytelling in a game actually work?", but they can't do that because the result would likely be something radically different than film and these fucks have already committed to the "cinematic" lie. It's just going to have to play itself out.

Ideally, we'ld be a situation like the music industry was in prior to the 90's, where it was run by old dudes who had no idea of what they were publishing or why kids liked it.. they just threw a bunch of shit against the wall and some of it stuck. Ideally, we'ld get a TON of new games of all kinds and some of it would catch on, make an obscene profit, and support all the rest. I agree with this one. At the moment the industry is in the hands of people who see and handle video games like old media. That would be the AAA scene on the one hand who want to have a second Hollywood and the SJW on the other. The grip on the industry of both, especially the SJW is getting weaker and weaker every day. How many 100% failures have we seen this year? How many typical hipster games have you seen this year on Steam? I can already tell you that it wasn't that many. The only reason writers are put up so highly on dev teams is because the rest of the team allows it, or the writers can provide more than just story. Video games are considered the bottom of the barrel if you're making art, writing, music, sound, etc. for it.(except for voice acting, dubbed anime is voice acting's barrel bottom) Even programming for video games will make people think you're shit tier compared to all other career holders in software development, no matter what kind of assets it takes to make a video game or how time consuming it is.

A lot of people who are enamored enough with video games to actually write for them also tend to have a WYSISYG sort of mindset and understanding in making the game work, which is probably one reason why there's a bunch of walking simulators and western Visual Novels.

AAA games are definitely getting smaller, but AA games aren't exactly on the rise, and indie games overall still lack the quality control to make sure at least a fifth of them are good or worth their money.
