What went wrong?

Every game that used the CryEngine was a tech demo.

Honestly? Consoles. What good is an engine capable of gorgeous graphics if most "gamers" will never be able to experience it? The logical conclusion there for any developer looking at potential engines to start a project on is to avoid said engine, since it doesn't make sense to pour a ton of money creating high quality assets that will either need to be removed or significantly downgraded to run on consoles. To put this into perspective, consider neither the Xbone S or Nogaemstation Pro can max out Crysis at 4K and maintain 60FPS. Now consider the fact that Crysis came out in 2007 and you see the problem here.

Graphics>Gameplay
Same thing with every game engine frankly and also what went wrong with the Unreal 3 Engine funny enough.

But Unreal 3 Engine can't even do graphics right.

I know, frankly that was the fault of pic related who really did end up setting Epic Games back 10 years. In fact if it wasn't for that fucktard Crytek would never have taken off like it did.

There's a reason WoW and other super popular, PC exclusive games don't have bleeding edge graphics that require a setup with four of the best graphics cards money can buy, and it's not so they can put it on consoles. It's so that people who have toasters, the extremely vast majority of people, can still run the game.

The source code isn't that great, it's difficult to work with and modify. Too much boilerplate crap, and the style is reminiscent of ugly 2000-2006 style C++ programming which diverges from common idioms. No C++11/C++14 forward compatibility.

Compare their math library to other vector math libraries written by amateurs on Github, and you'll see what I mean.

Is not free, not even like UE.

WoW actually has insanely high system requirements if you wish to maintain 60+ FPS while raiding. Throw addons into the mix and the requirements go even higher. It was never toaster friendly.

A stupid question but I guess it's kinda related to this thread. Why are most vidya porn made in SFM? Can't you make short animations on other engines? Why don't I see porn made in Cry Engine or Unity or whatever?

sfm is free, it's retarded easy. Has the negative effect of making everything you run through it look like sfm and sfm looks horrendous. 3DCG porn was much better when the closest you got to free/accessible was MMD.

Kebab owners, who have no real business sense and who couldn't create anything of value, besides said good looking engine.

Crysis 1 is only considered good retroactively. At the time it came out, it was considered a generic FPS with some amazing graphics, and that's about it. Vast majority of people only played it to test out their new rigs, that's it.

Even of Crysis 2 and 3 didn't have to gimp themselves for consoles, nobody would really give a shit, as all you would get is bigger, more flashy looking environments, with just as little depth as the actual product we got. Nobody would give a shit outside of benchmark dick-measuring.

They failed to create any interesting games and relied solely upon their reputation as a powerful graphics engine, failed to propagate said engine, and eventually the well went dry.

stop trying to fit in and actually look at the list of games using CryEngine
It's not just games by Crytek, retard

What is made for the majority isn't made for everyone. Say what you want about the recent Total War games but that shit pushes hardware. Crysis is an example too just not one that's actually being made anymore. If a dev wants to push tech to the limit for a relatively niche audience then PC exclusive is obviously the only option.

Crysis 1 was rad as hell, you could do crazy shit like put C4 on a barrel, toss the barrel up into the air, and maximum punch it at a helicopter to blow it up. Sandbox shooters are few and far between and even fewer have the physics Crysis had. Of course the second half of the game with the aliens sucked but everyone knows that.

Also I've yet to play another game that makes me feel like predator and those arkhamshit games do not count.

He's not wrong.

Taking base content + expansions into account (no mods/addons), raids were literally designed to be played and beaten while toasters were chugging at 5FPS. Might not be as toaster-friendly as people remember it being, but people tend to forget when the design compensates for it.

t. someone who never progressed beyond MC

I'm brimming with confidence of all these great games, how much did you spend for those 20K jpegs user?

The game engine is almost 17 years old, they can add a few upgrades here and a new coat of paint there, but it's pretty damn dated, no wonder the Gooks and Chinks are leaving that Singplayer-MMO simulator for their own MMOs.

wew it's almost as if normalfags are retarded.

name one other game where you can choke a gook before throwing him at his friend.

but he's right
take a look at Ryse, son of rome
extremely repetitive gameplay, shit story
the only thing the game had going for it was the graphics

I mildly enjoyed that game, just because you can approach each fight in your own way, felt really open ended.

Cryengine has amazing tech, but it is buggy, user-unfriendly, and has terrible documentation. On top of that using it sets a certain expected graphical level that is stupidly effort and time consuming to do. Mix all those together and you got a recipe for disaster when it comes to developing a game on limited budget and time (AKA all games).

Don't talk about things you don't know, I'm gonna guess you weren't around when Crysis released. The huge map and being allowed to deal with obstacles as you wished due to the freedom of movement was amazing back then. Couple that with seamless transitioning between infantry and vehicle combat and it was fucking great back then.

You're just used to all that nowadays due to every semi-open world game having that stuff, but in 2007 it was far from common.

I really enjoyed crysis up until the ayyyliens

Nothing wrong with them.

The first Crysis was an incredible game in my opinion, just rough around the edges.
Precisely the right amount of freedom for a shooter, very open and enough tools to have a fun time from any direction you approach the objective as. You felt so fucking powerful in your suit yet at the same time so vulnerable because of the amount of enemies and their solid positioning.

The structure was awesome, and then the aliens weren't but the game finished almost immediately after

Why would you choke a man before throwing him at his friend?

Youre forgetting the best game of 2017

thats not nier automata

Fucked up Star Citizen in the long run, so it did well in that regard.

That thing fucked up itself. CE probably didn't help at all but the results would have been similar on any other engine.

Fucking weeaboo consolefags don't even appreciate best pc games coming. Suck my dick and chock on it, noir mamabanana.

I hate that faggot.

Fucking board ia full of casuals, at least you didn't go full Nitentoddler dilusional and mentioned Boypussy of the Wild.

Look at all these toaster faggots still butthurt about a 2007 game.
Crysis was great, only casuals complain about the aliens much like only casualshits complained about FarCrys Trigens.

Bleszinski

The actual reason is that working with this engine is a pain in the ass. They made coding for it a bitch so few devs were willing to work on it.

The only thing wrong was that fighting the Koreans was far more fun.

At least you can post. Who are you?

I love the texture buffering. It makes unreal games load almost instantly. Pick an unreal engine game and enter a game via the server browser, you'll be in the map within 2 seconds. Then the textures load over the next three seconds. This is ideal.

Plenty of super popular PC games have and had great graphics for their time.
Toddler.

confirmed for being incapable of SSS/Pure platinum ranking any cuhrayzee game

Removing Gook is always fun.

...

...

Horrible support and documentation, Like sure the engine can shit gorgeous graphics but only Crytek knew how to use it well and it was a nightmare to debug

It's also common knowledge that you need to tournament even though enemies can sometimes gang up on you and avoid damaging each other while swinging

Poorly optimized
Bug ridden mess

It looks nice, but underneath the veneer it's fucking awful.

Unity is better.

If you want an engine that'll look good and perform good, and you don't mind the pricetag, you go unreal engine.

How hard is it to make a game anyway? a stalker like game? Where do you even start?

It does not matter who i am.
No one cared who i am unitll i choked a gook.

First, you need to internalize cheeki breekiā€¦

You wot?

Double wat

Triple wat

If you don't know shit about shit, just shut the fuck up.

I'm gonna miss Crytek if they die.
They're bleeding money right now.

Their engine will live on
IN THE HANDS OF AMAZON!

Fuuuuuck, where can i download this? Now i just want to fuck around with it and make weird alien landscapes.

That kind of future is worse then death.

FACT: When video games technology is significantly dragged backwards the culprit is always consoles.

The deal is not absolutely awful for small/medium sized projects, specially if the game won't have dedicated servers (since one of the conditions is dedicated servers only host by Amazon). Other than that, they were supposed to be working on the documentation and network, not sure how much truth there is to it.

I used to make glass penises and crack them in the crysis sdk, best fun I've had with crysis 2

Crysis 1 was both a critical and financial success. While I agree with your conclusion about the engine you're way off mark by saying that it started out flat.
