Hey guys! I was just over on half-chan asking about capture equipment, thought I'd ask best-chan's opinion on it.
So my question is; there's something I don't understand, and I'm not sure how to look it up. I was thinking about pc video capture, I know there is software that uses for existing hardware to capture window/game/monitor footage, but is there a card that does this instead of using your CPU? I'm away of things for consoles to capture game footage (hdpvr, elgato, and the like) I'm also aware that there's a version of those that is meant to plug to a PCIE lane, but does such a thing exist on PC for PC? Or am I retarded and are the already existing ones capable of capturing pc footage as well? I should state I'm not interested in recording personally, I've just been looking in to it and figured there must have been an option for that.

Yes it's called NVENC/VCE/Quicksync, best parrt of it you already have that for free when you buy your PC.
Obviously you could just plug the HDMI out of your video card to your capture card then the pass through to your screen but why bother, you also won't be able to use anything more than [email protected]/* */
I was just curious as to if there were a way to bypass the need to looping through a card to a monitor, but I think you are missing the point of my question, NVENC, VCE, and Quicksync (to my knowledge) require an Nvidia card. My question is, is there a card specifically for recording that does not require plugging to a GPU and is standalone for encoding instead of having to use GPU or CPU. Sorry if it's frustrating user :s

I'm aware that audio can be captured without the microphone being plugged directly into a soundcard. Like I have it plugged to the MOBO but OBS picks it up anyway. As you can see in the wire diagrams above it's a bit needless to have so many things banded together and making not only a corded mess, but a mess of the powerbill.

I understand the nvidia hate, but it is the most efficient software capturer i know of, IF you have a 600+ geforce card. If you have AMD, you there is another option, but i don't remember the name..

VCE is the AMD version of NVENC
Quicksync is the intel version of NVENC
There little reason you wouldn't have a computer that doesn't support at-least one of those nowadays.
The impact is very low unless you're only using an IGP and even then it's not really high.
OBS/OBS studio probably has the best support all around for GPU encoding and isn't bloatware cancer like shadowplay/raptr/relive
Passthrough are lagless so there nothing really bad about that unless you hate having tons of cables
The only alternative I can think of is using one video out for your screen and the other for your capture card and setting your multimonitor mode to clone but some games are anal about that and you still end up with loads of cables.
There's no individual capture card that can capture video with just being plugged to a PCIe port.

I have nothing against Nvidia, I try to avoid brand loyalty, but I'm looking for something that is independent of GPU and CPU as to put no extra load on either.
A guy in the half-chan thread mentioned an Avermedia device that does more or less what I'm talking about but no work on if it requires daisychaning.

I did, some hero on there found the Avermedia Live Gamer HD, from what I've read thus far it seems to fit the bill for the most part. Will update with more info as it comes in.

According to Linus, the OBS forums, and Avermedia forums the Live Gamer HD does have an onboard encoder to lessen if not remove CPU/GPU load; however, unless you par for the fancy pants ( 200 and up) version, the quality will be poop.
