It seems like 2016 has been the worst year for vidya in recent memory. I can't think of any games that came out this year that I actually enjoyed, except maybe Stellaris or Hearts of Iron 4 (both of which were inherently flawed and couldn't hold up over extended gameplay sessions).
Am I just forgetting about some great game that released in 2016, or has it really all been complete shit? Is there even anything to look forward to anymore?

Well if you count them as releases I really enjoyed Dragon's Dogma and EDF 4.1 on PC. Also Killing Floor 2 isn't as much as in a bad spot as it was before, skins jewry aside.
The Last Guardian was good, though. Bird AI struggled with the I part at times and the camera controls liked to be broken, but overall it was good.
Bannerlord comes out in the next few years, and Persona 5 if you're into normalfag approved weeb trash.
Otherwise just play games from previous years and ignore the industry until something shows up that interests you.

If you're using Unity or Unreal 4 I think there are Linux ports of the editors. You just click compile or whatever and select the X1 as the target, then use whatever devkit tool you get to stick it on the Xbox for testing. Otherwise C# and Mono would probably be a good start.

It would be a lot harder for consoles. Console games have to be rated, for one. You'd have to sneak your political reasons past a rating board, and I don't know if you can sell AO-rated games on the digital store. Also you can't just not tell them about some parts, or you'll be in deep shit. The only example of a controversial game being released recently was Hatred, and the guys at Unreal updated their ToS to stop that sort of game in newer versions of Unreal 4. Also that's a PC game, and you don't have to rate your games on PC.
It's not on the Xbox but Meme Run was a piece of shit released on the Wii U by some guy who either made his own devkit or got one leaked. Microsoft might have better security but if you can find a way to get the devkit conversion software you could at least develop the game without Microsoft knowing.
Last option would be to "localize" it, by changing just enough to hide the political undertones of your game. On one hand you'd be sacrificing your artistic vision, on the other hand lots of games can be interpreted as having political undertones.

That reminds me of a community that wanted to make a Star Trek game, so they made a generic space game and made a Star Trek mod for it under another name.
Only issue would be adding mods to a console game, but you could get around that by having something like that built in. Kinda like those create-a-character tools in the Wrestlemania games. Make a generic war simulator, but have tools to design your soldiers and army, and it isn't your fault when people make Holla Forums and attack armies of pink-haired communists.

nigger FFXV isn't a really beat-em up action rpg. If I wanted to play a Platinum Game I'd play a Platinum Game. Play with Wait mode and focuses on resource management and team attacks. There is alot more nuanced to the system then you are implying. Sure you can grind and over level everything but when you face a real challenge then you see exactly what the designer was going for. But all Final Fantasy games are easy if you grind and many are piss easy even if you don't grind.
Last Tales game I played was tales of xillia (great game) but I personally liked FFXV more. and while I don't prefer story getting in the way of my gameplay, I personally kinda liked the story and characters of FFVX. I even found the coup of noodles shilling sorta endearing

Story is inherently superfluous in all video games and the less the story gets in the way of meaningful gameplay the better. Story in video games is like story in pornography and the story in XV is perfectly adequate. The only part that sucked was that extended prison area when you where separated from your friends and the antagonist was taunting you. In fact it was the parts that tried to hard to be an "epic story" that where the biggest drawbacks. I would have preferred more maze like dungeons and big boss battles. Compared to the trash heap that was FF13 this is a step in the right direction and gets back to its fundamentals and WoFF proved that Square still knows how to do active turn based battle. So if they where to marry the two game formulas (maybe taking a page out to the Tales of series playbook) they could potentially finally get the active/turn based formula right with their next game. And while open world is often a lazy cop out, in this game it was actually impressively detailed and interesting, exploration was an aspect of FF that had been missing for years because faggots thought "Muh story" where the most important part of the Franchise. Yet FF5 had a shit story and was one of the better games. I was a fan sense the NES day's and always hated the changes after FF7 (and the cancerous fanbase) and FFXV was actually more faithful to the old games (despite is more action focused gameplay) then the last 4 or 7 games in the series.

It's a turn-based RPG where you play as some outcast with a history you can choose (and there are A LOT of them, one includes being a rapist which I used to make a Rance character), but it also affects how the game will play out
the combat itself is at the same time simpler than older cRPGs yet still offers a lot of depth due to the nature of the encounters, but most importantly it's fast and not slow. There's also plenty of shit to explore and find, and a lot of party members to recruit, shit's great
the art is hella bara, though there's barely any gay shit in the game itself

Holla Forums just in the interests of fun, what would you think of a game where the focus is to make a small map to play around in, in which everything is destructible and many of things that make games look and feel fake are gone?
Basically, the entire game would be set in just a single house with some property around it, and it would be about sieging the house. Players in the game could break through the drywall, cut the electricity, break the windows, fuck up the brick-walls, pick up any objects, board up the windows, and even take clumps of dirt out of the ground.
The objective of the game could center around co-existing in a house together doing various activities in the house to sieging the house and trying to defend it, in which one team has no respawns and has to defend the place until everyone is killed.
…but I'm really not big into playing games, especially when they're all so shit, and I could be doing better things with my time.

Not the best postgame I admit, unless you enjoy grinding for 100+ hours to get min maxed teams for the battle zone of this game. Fortunately, when it comes to completely tedious tasks, I have great stamina. Still, the most amazing thing about the game is how it embraces the competitive memes. You have totem Pokemon powering up to simulate IV and EV tweaking along with calling in allies with synergies, having the final story team leader fight have all boosted Pokemon with actually effective moves and the final trainer before the credits start off with fucking stealth rock and a Pokemon using a forced team switch move. I'm not sure whether it was a good move or not to hide the IV checker in the post game behind several difficult trainers and at least one trainer boss with a full team, two if you don't want to fly every time you want to go to a pokecenter. Also I was looking up to see if save backups were a thing and discovered action replay is using a micro-transaction format for cheats.
There are actually trainers with minmaxed IVs and EVs from what I've read. Hau's Raichu has maxed out speed. There's also another neat feature where, during the second Lusamine fight, her pokemon are visibly angry. They changed directors for the new game, and it really shows.
Also what's that about Action replay's microtransactions? That sounds horrible

To answer your question, I really enjoyed myself with Furi, Deadbolt, and AM2R. Furi is a fun little adrenaline rush that'll last you maybe a weekend or two, it has an ambiguous but very interesting story with great music to boot. Deadbolt is by the Risk of Rain guys and manages to be somehow extremely comfy and atmospheric even though it's a 2d stealth game. AM2R is solid, creative Metroid down to its core, with occasional hiccups here and there, but I think it's the best one since Super. This year I also decided to go play some games I never tried from previous years like Deus Ex, Strider, the Shovel Knight expansion, and I also put CFW on my 3ds and enjoyed its huge library during travels. Some of my more "mixed bag" experiences were games like Dark Souls 3, with incredibly enjoyable moments and really boring parts.

So yes, there are games to look forward to. 2017 is looking good in terms of creativity again and Japan is looking like its going to bounce back in a BIG way in the industry. People are sick of western AAA games being the same shit practically, while hiding content behind a 30.00 "this shit is optional but we want you to feel like it isn't" paywall called a season pass.
