so gorby thinks that the USSR falling was a mistake

what do you think ?

Maybe he shouldn't have helped.

DUSTBIN OF HISTORY

All of these countries are neoliberal shitholes, them getting back together means nothing. It's just nationalism, there would be no attempt at socialism and it wouldn't improve anyone's lives other than the bourgeois.

Sounds hypocritical.

...

Soviets were more of federation than union in structural sense.

What's the difference? The EU is a confederate union. The US is a federal union. I was under the impression the USSR was more integrated than the EU is today.

Difference is in the level of autonomy between the member states. But personally I would want to see EU to become more of federation on long term.

To be fair, I'm actually defending the idea of a Slavic federation under Russian guidance if it had socialistic principals. The EU has been a means of capital consolidation. That's part of the reason I'm in favor of Britain leaving.

Forgot flag.

What makes you think I like the EU? Also fuck off nazi

Well it would not have such principles since United Russia is determined to make sure that Russian economy keeps going down the drain and they surely donĀ“t want to make healthcare public or get rid of their private education system.

I was for UK leaving the EU too, since it takes out the only party in union that is opposed firmly to further integration and EU army.

I'm an American who lived in Europe for a few years (in France) and I still have a lot of friends there. I noticed most leftists over there are either very pro-EU or full on anarchist. Maybe that's because France would stand to gain a lot of power from integration, being such a huge force in the EU?

Anyway from an outside American perspective I cannot think of a leftist argument for Americanizing the EU.

I can see plenty of reasons for further integration. Common taxes, universal healthcare across whole Europe and more defined labor laws that have only been messy and leading into such development where labor is not so free to move around EU as corporations are. Also unions would become lot more effective since they would no longer be limited to national level but could affect whole of EU.

Most leftists hate the EU. What are you talking about?

No they don`t, European parliament`s leftists are the most supportive faction of EU and so are most of major leftist parties in Europe. Only right-wing populists and fringe communist parties are opposed to it.

Well, fancy this. Gorbachev doesn't pretend anymore that he did good and neo-liberal reforms were necessary.

Stories about Civil War are an obvious bullshit, of course. As referendum showed, absolute majority supported USSR even during the absolute clusterfuck of 1991. Moreover, Civil War needs an army that is ready to shoot at people. No such thing was possible in 1991. Even in 1993 Yeltsin had to rely on gangsters.

Also, Gorbachev never "left" his post. He did everything to stay in charge, until people simply stopped following his orders and he got kicked out.

...

Oh wow what a shocker. The EU is an anti-democratic neoliberal nightmare that needs to die.

I can see that in theory. Definitely the idea of open borders in Europe has been hugely beneficial. I know a handful of people who have left France to work elsewhere in the EU, so that definitely influences their opinion on the EU.

However their ideas change pretty quickly when I ask how they'd feel about France giving up their seat the UN in place of the EU. Most people don't even pay attention to EU elections and then they say the EU isn't democratic.

Welcome to Holla Forums, home of the fringe communists.

I don`t know what is worse: the complete ignorance of citizenry when it comes to EU or the lack of media coverage over the PM`s European parliament.

If it was undemocratic the democratically elected governments of member states would have left the project. It just seems undemocratic due to lack of media coverage and thanks to council of Europe holding the reigns of power instead of the parliament.

Didn't you once say that Gorbychev himself said he would try to start a civil war if he was kicked out?

The EU is, was, and always will be a project of the US and the corporate elite to implement free-trade and exploit labor. I thought that was pretty much widely known?

The left will never be able to shape the EU institution into anything other than what it was always intended to be. I think even most liberals are starting to consider it a noble experiment that has failed to live up to the hype.

I don't remember saying this, nor Gorbachev claiming this.

It's pretty hardcore statement, and situation never deteriorated to that level while Gorbachev was in charge. It was possible for Yeltsin, though.
