Eh, I'd be suspicious of statements like that. A lot of very long-lived cultures had significantly different family structures than the "nuclear family" model of the postwar West. The Russian family model, for example, still heavily emphasizes the role of grandparents in bringing up children; Iroquois, Haida and many others built longhouses to contain three or four families at a time; Trobriand fathers barely participate in their children's lives at all, and so on.
