Most of these countries would have been shitholes with or without socialism, at least socialism usually provided social security, safety and food. Socialism is not some hex that you can cast upon a country and then every problem disappears - same with capitalism, it didn't make things better, and in some cases, even worse.
In some cases Socialism didn't fail, like in the USSR until Khrushchev revisionism - and even that was better than modern Russia.

Overt violence is better than covert violence because people will be aware of it. Every day under capitalism people fucking starve to death or die of exposure when we easily have enough food and shelter for everyone. People don't see or understand this. If the violence is brought to the surface (DAPL is a good example), people will start to see the true nature of the system. Violence is built in, but typically happens via artificial scarcity rather than bullets or grenades flying.
