I'm curious. I missed out on Ostfront and ended up going straight to Red Orchestra 2, which I enjoyed. How much better is the original? Is it better as far as simulation goes? I know it's far less anemic on content as far as vehicles go thanks to Tripwires' cuntery regarding modders supplying them models that they then proceeded to sit on and do nothing with. Are the ballistics better? How is weapon handling? I rather liked the freeaim in RO2, even if it allowed for silly Rambo bullshit once you got a handle on it. Are tanks sufficiently detailed as far as simulation goes even if they don't have the fancy interior detailing of RO2? I'm just generally curious about Ostfront/Darkest Hour, I never see anyone talking about it except about how it's great (thought not why) and Tripwire is total shit, the latter of which I already know.

I'll say this right away, I'm a complete and utter Ostfront/Darkest Hour faggot.

Ostfront was quite amazing. New maps and new vehicles were being released in a regular basis, and players were generating a complete metric shitton of content as well.

At the beginning Ostfront had, content wise, an extremely good mixture of early and late-war equipment and vehicles, which later got expanded a bit with mid-war equipment. Map wise, you had essentially battlefields going from Berlin to Stalingrad to plains of Ukraine and everywhere between. And that's just with official maps. Maps modders made had basically whole sections of cities created in 1:1 scale.

Gameplay wise, armored combat was bit lackcluster, you had some sort of HP-system in place, where your tank usually could take two penetrating shots before blowing up from a tank of similar size, non penetrating shots usually glanced off, but that would require that you angled your tank towards the enemy that was shooting at you. You had driver, gunner and radio-man usually(using hull mounted MG), tanks could be used in solo. Sometimes, these two features would end up creating a rather absurd situations with skilled players, such as Tiger and IS-2 circling each-other with 20 meters in between, completely unable to kill each other due to being unable to reload ammunition quickly enough and drive the tank quickly enough to get a penetrating angle. It would essentially turn into a ballet between IS-2 and Tiger unless someone intervened.

Another odd situation that happened to me with Ostfront tanks was when I was in a stug using wreck of a T-34 as cover. Enemy KV-1 rolls into view, I switch to gunner position, take aim, and fire. I hear that odd "clang" sound that happens when a shell glances off. I was confused for a moment before dying. Somehow the Unreal engine had calculated that firing from such a low height, and such a close distance in relation to T-34's sloped armor, the only logical direction for the shell to go was upwards. And thus the shell landed on the roof of my stug, claiming that I had just commited a suicide with a stug.

Infantry combat was bit slower, with far fewer automatic and semi-automatic weapons when compared to RO2. I might be remembering incorrectly, but I think infantry combat in Ostfront was smoother, with less of retarded shit like CANNOT PRONE HERE driving you crazy. Maps were more open with quite a bit less emphasis on urban combat. Artillery actually sounded far better in Ostfront than it does in RO2. It sounded like some maddened god was trying to rip the world apart.
