That was kind of the point, there would be no challenge if there weren't areas that weren't just "hold right".

Technically they didn't lie, the CPU was faster. The SNES was late as hell to the party so the Genesis had already been out for awhile when they started trying to meme this.

The comics/cartoon/story line caused that don't blame the Genesis games for it.

I think that the game is really fucking lacking in both speed and puzzles, puzzles were just shit to slow you down. I think Sonic would have been better as an action game, as in, you needed to do more to keep your speed and no fucking puzzles. Seriously, Sonic games are really mediocre in what they try to do.
Autism about Sonic was real back then too, specially on kids that grew up to draw furry porn on Deviantart, you just didn't know because Deviantart didn't exist back then.

This one does. It's entirely an improvement project on S3&K, rather than trying to make its own game. It's better than S3&K in every way (including giving you tons of options, like being able to just play S3&K vanilla).

This is why I still come here. I agree with most all your points other than the games begin totally mediocre. At the time it really was the fastest thing we'd seen platformer wise. I know someone is going to prove me wrong but a lot of people came over from NES platformers to Genesis. Sonic was the pack in so to see it running for the first time was amazing and you instantly knew Mario was old news and we were heading great places.

Sonic 1 is a bit of a tech demo, Sonic 2 is the expansion pack. Sonic 3 (well what Sonic 3 was supposed to be) was perfection on the formula of what Sonic was trying to be at the time. You can't say there wasn't a huge jump up in mechanics and variety of areas in that game if you really ran through them all in order.

This was made during the era of Sonic games where instead of creating good levels for replayability, they require you to repeat the same fucking levels but with different context to get the full ending. It pissed me off back then. Don't care what Adventurefags say about story, but I'm glad that at least the modern Sonic games got rid of their habit of stretching the game time in a fake way and actually just made more levels for replayability like a decent game should.

That's completely optional, though, you can beat the whole thing without giving a shit about Chaos. I recently replayed the game, and my biggest complain is that it isn't as fast as I remember and the homing attacks from Sonic/Shadow weren't as good as I remember either, specially when I remember I used to do those at rails to start them at high speed. I remember that the attack went straight to the rail, but now it doesn't. I dunno if I was good or I just got used to that.
