I always felt that all the hate for furries stemmed mostly from their persecution complex. And I'd bet big money that if you tracked the most annoying furry from a couple of years ago up to today, they'd be an SJW of some sort. I'd further bet there's a large group of people that just shuffle from biggest, most special snowflake groups just so they can keep the high: it'd be like someone going from furry, to emo, to hipster, to SJW. Anything to feel like the world is against them, that they are unique, and that they are just ahead of the curve and better than the world.
Purge them with flame, yiff in hell, and all that, but I think furries have stabilized socially. They know it's a little in left field but it's what they like, so why be bothered by what others think about you. But they eventually picked up on furry stuff and furry sites, did the standard thing of making fun of them for as long as there was stuff to make fun of, and furries just made the uneducated choice of trying to defend themselves from random internet trolls, and it just sorta went from there, as furries were, at the time, one of the largest sub-groups on the internet.

I have to agree with this. The scene in the West is rather shallow and most of the time creatively bankrupt. Drama is present in any fanbase, but with furfags it's far more common. The obsession with OCs and pushing that OC out there by commissioning popular furfag artists who charge out the ass for mediocrity (wolfy-nail for example) is one of the most damaging factors along with the patreon jewing for slow page by page updates of mediocre comics. When was the last time you saw a Western furry work get published? I certainly can't remember anything about that.
It's quite different in the East with kemono works appearing in monthly hentai magazines, kemono doujins and merchandise being sold at Comiket and Wonderfest and certain artists doing all types of art to go along with their kemono stuff. There is a quite a bit of crossover with other fanbases in Japan. Yuuki Ray is a big fan of furry stuff and he recently released an sol manga about a fox girl going to a human school. Nenemaru does both monstergirl and kemono art, same with Mizone, Nakagami Takashi sometimes gets featured in kemonomimi and monstergirl antologies. Stuff like that. I never see that sort of crossover in the West, unless it's shoehorned furshit to appeal to every possible market in some Patreon/Kickstarter project like Breeding Season for example.
