How many games this gen do you actually consider must play games?
In almost 3 years i have two. Even then Bloodborne is limited in appeal since not everyone likes city of old god worshippers with nightmare creatures victorian gothic horror and little to no PVP and Overwatch needs more maps and overall complexity so neither are perfect at all, but in terms of games that came out in the last 2 or 3 years i consider as good as pre 2008 dark times period games i can name those two and nothing else. Plus i expect nothing solid in future other than maybe the Pokemon Sun/Moon changes to the formula make for a fun game but for other releases like FFXV and the last guardian my expectations are low at best.
What have you got for the 'good' pile recently?
Brody Morales
Bloodborne, The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2 are really the only that come to mind for me, but I may be forgetting some good ones as I've only really bought exclusives this gen so far. Even then, I haven't bought many.
The PS4 at least has Ni-oh on the way next year, which will be great unless the devs for some reason completely overhaul it between the beta and its full release, but the Wii U is pretty much dead at this point.
Owen Hughes
I forgot about Bayo 2. Trouble with that is the world, fights and story are all worse than the first but the gameplay itself is so much better it makes going back to Bayo 1 much much harder to do like wind waker does for ocarina.
William Young
I know what you mean, yeah. I tried going back to the first Bayonetta after having beaten Bayo 2 twice and was struggling to get past one of the levels shortly after the first fight with Fortitudo, since the framerate drops were unbearable even without comparing it to 2. The first game also has a lot more QTEs with barely any telegraphing that instantly fail the level if you miss them than 2 does, which is also really frustrating.
Jackson Stewart
Good game I'd understand, but must play ? Come on now. Well that explains it.
Thomas Reyes
Jesus fuck those shit taste. Pic related it the only must
Evan Scott
Why? It's shit. It's basically taking the worst parts of the FPS genre and mixing it in with the worst parts of the MOBA genre.
Mason Sanders
Such things don't exist.
William Thomas
I can get behind bloodborne, as it is pretty amazing for [current year], but I play overwatch and don't think anyone is missing anything by not playing it.
Ian King
I want OP to explain his reasoning for OW to be on the "must play" list.
I played Dota and I have played TF2. Combining them into one game doesn't make it an amazingly new experience. It just make it a horribly balance game with bad gameplay.
Landon Anderson
Man OP, this is a pretty shit thread isn't it? Overwatch isn't a must have don't kid yourself. I'm assuming you only play console trash if Bloodborne and Overwatch are the only two "must plays" you have.
Connor Taylor
bloodborne, splatoon, tropical freeze, the wonderful 101, bayonetta 2.
Noah Johnson
the only good games this generation have been console games. The last PC game worth the time was stalker call of pripyat and it was even a little lackluster.
Parker Williams
'This gen' does imply console games, user.
And what PC games released this gen would you say are must plays, then? I can't think of any. That's not me criticisng the PC as a platform, it's moreso a comment on how lackluster this gen has been.
Angel Lewis
Alien Isolation, good game, goes under a lot of people's radar when they talk about good current gen games, though.
Cameron Jenkins
Absolutely must play?
Only Cold Steel.
Angel Parker
Taste is subjective but PC is mostly MOBA/MMO trash and I hate socialising so that's out.
Henry Morgan
Shit taste. .>Cities skylines

How desperate for attention are you? People will see your post without you actively pointing them towards it.

these are all boring western shit. I'm sorry, you might want to try experiencing new games. If you think Xcom is any interesting, try look in to Dragon Force 1 and 2 on the Saturn if you like tactics rpgs.

It isn't the best multiplayer FPS out because it isn't out yet.
It does matter because it isn't even out yet
Wyatt James
yes, ut4 is really nothing interesting. First person games are largely a vapid, brain dead genre, and multiplayer games are pretty cancerous themselves. Even then, the game itself seems pretty dead. It seems to have no online presence and at best I see only people here mention it in any positive light, but never that they actually play it.
I'm just being objective when I say the best games are Japanese, I don't mean to offend you, it is just a matter of observation.
dark souls 3 is a lot worse than bloodborne. I don't really see DaS3 as something worth playing, but bloodborne is very, very good.
Jacob Garcia
Yeah DS3, Irithyll aside was empty, uninspired garbage.
They had to resort to sticking undead humans to sheer walls like spiderman as "traps". Thats fucking clownshoes.
Bentley Brooks
Witcher 3 is the only must play game in recent years, it's what HL2 was last decade
Nathaniel Russell
If I can play it then it's out. Anyone can download and play it.
This is amazing coming from a weeaboo. I can always find a few servers so it doesn't matter. Now get gassed.
Tyler Wood
Oh and kek. You have shit taste.
Jayden Cook
I have played PC DaS3 and on PS4 with bloodborne. It's much better with 60FPS, you can effectively pull off the same kind of fast paced combat on PC port, which feels clunky on ps4 Bloodborne is much better in terms of environment, level design, themes, characters, just about everything else where DaS3 is just a fucking fanfiction wankfest.
Christian Baker
Why are you THIS upset? different people like different things. No reason to have a meltdown. This isn't Holla Forums.

there were some neat things that felt like a return to the more distinct areas of dark souls 1 from dark souls 2. The dragon traps, the giant in the middle of the room, the tree monster guy fight and the subsequent drop to the lower arena. All these things felt very nice, but the game itself felt very half baked. I don't think it's bad, but it's OK. It's so OK it's barely worth acknowledging. If you really want more dark souls, play it, but it's really not that special.
I understand you're angry, but it might help to tone it down a bit so you can be a bit more rational about everything. I can tell you're very upset, but I want to urge you to stretch out and try new genres. I used to think first person games were incredible, but the reality is outside of a few stand out titles, like stalker soc, thief, system shock 1 and ultima underworld - to name a few - the first person genre is indeed largely braindead and uninteresting.
framerate improvements are nice, but like you said, everything else is better in bloodborne. I'm happy to settle with lesser performance if everything about the game is better. I don't even really think framerate is as big a deal as some make it out to be. Of course it's an objective improvement to have a game run at 60fps, at least (and without issues like das 1 & 2 have), but it's not a deal breaker for me, and frankly I think some people overblow the issue tremendously.
Grayson Butler
This is pretty ironic since that applies more to and Who goes
The game is out user. It's literally out and I can play it. Just because they are adding more content doesn't mean it isn't out.
Blake Perez
I have. You clearly haven't played UT if you think DS simple combat is good but UT is brainless. Arena shooters require a lot more thought. It's one thing to be a casual but another to pretend your casual trash is better.
Luis Harris
Blizzard has been shilling this game here for some time so it's to be expected. They are pretending their shit game is as good as Dark souls (One of Holla Forums's favorite games) and then get the cucked mods to delete any criticism.
Eli Hernandez
I never said western games are bad, just Japanese games are better. You need to calm down.
I think dark souls' combat is fine, I like how it has little things you can do if you target enemies on specific points in their animation, and the parry system is very satisfying to master for each enemy. A great sense of risk and reward really pays off. If it makes you feel superior, like you so apparently need to, sure I suppose UT4's combat could require more thought. I don't really like multiplayer games any more, they bore me in just half an hour, you grow out of them in time and they become very uninteresting. Just because a games combat is simple doesn't mean it is bad, however. You seem to be conflating complexity with quality, this is not the case.
Lincoln Sanders
Bloodborne and that's literally it, and for a 'must play' I won't ever play it, since I'm not going to get a PS4 just to play one game.
Andrew Ward
I tried to fix it but that's not even right, Epic explicitly says on their page that it's still in pre-alpha.
Brandon Torres
Is this trolling?
Jordan Price
does it upset you?
Ian Johnson
Without being able to explain why. But because they are "japanese". Weeaboos are basically no better than furries.
So you admit the only reason you find the games "Boring western" is because you are a weeb and casual.
Grayson Russell
Look up the definition of an alpha. Pre-alpha is just a marketing term.
Justin Thompson
To know that half chan is invading. Yes it does a little bit.
Justin Taylor
Japanese devs can be shamed and must please the consumer, western devs have to please shareholders and the consumer is someone to be tricked.
Aaron Hernandez
Divinity is on PlayStation. So is Xcom. Unreal is an online shooter.
I give you City Skylines.
Anthony Murphy
I don't have to look it up because I know what it means, but just to humor you, I did, and what do you know? I was right. It's not the same thing as a completed released game. Do you assume everyone in the world is dumb except for you?
Liam Campbell
Good thing that isn't the case for half the games I listed isn't it? Oh and the japs also have to please shareholders. But even despite all this DOS, Wasteland and UT are more interesting and less braindead than Bloodborne which is just another souls rehash.
Jackson Price
I assume you are if you put marketing terms above real definitions of words. UT4 is in alpha but it is released.
Mason Gonzalez
so sour grapes?
Christopher Taylor
How? I played Bloodborne. What is there to be sour about? This is the classic cuck chan argument though. Maybe you should go back there.
Ethan Cox
The classic consolefag console war buzzword.
Luis James
See that's where we differ on things, and yes people do overblow it, I mostly play those kind of games for the PvP shenanigans which is largely affected by framerate. Bloodborne's PvP was kill every time I tried it. It is the superior game in ever regard though still mad I can't lagswitch on ps4 though
Julian Ward
Because you clearly didnt if you think its the worst, its like going "yeah i played final fantasy tactics, its shit compared to final fantasy 8"
hardware loyalty/fanboyism is the only reason you could consider it inferior to ds2 or 3
Ryan Wood
I hope you mean the 2D one not that god-awful remake.
Austin Ortiz
Right. The alpha is released. Not the game. I don't know if I can explain this simply enough for you to understand.
Jayden Wilson
I actually never said that, Japanese developers and directors seem to have a better grasp on how mechanics in games work. Many games with melee combat use a frame pause for each swing in a sword - just as an example. Each point where a hit is registered in this swing there's a pause, the game stalls on a single frame for a few frames, calculating hits with a hit pause. I saw something similar in the new shadow warrior 2 in a trailer, where they clearly were inspired by it, but missed the point entirely. Instead of pausing on each frame where a hit is calculated, the game calculates several hits in a single swing, this is a clear and foundational misunderstanding I've noticed in western games. This is not to say I think all Western games are bad, as you so strongly want to think I said.
Another example is ori and the blind forest, which largely was a good game, but once you approach the level up system, where you can upgrade individual skills and stats and unlock some abilities, you start to see how the entire game falls apart. Implementing an unnecessary upgrade system for the sake of having a skinner box to goad the player into going on, instead of relying on core mechanics and fun level design that engages with the players understanding of those mechanics, it used a cheap EXP and level up system to hook the player. This is incredibly common in Western games, sadly. Things like Ori's unlockable triple jump trivialize and remove any challenge in traversal of many locations in the game and down play legitimately interesting mechanics like the bash. A real shame.
bloodborne is a better game than all of those. I've played a few CRPG/WRPGs and I do not see the appeal. The Witcher 1, 2, planescape torment, fallout 1 and 2, despite being some of the highest praised were honestly pretty terrible games. I regret my time with them. Boring combat, over-reliance on story, and very uninteresting mechanics.
if it makes you feel any more of a pit of unease, I've been here since september 2014 and I've got no plans to leave.
tbh it makes you sound like a bit of a cheater when you bring up lag switching. I'll happily take a great single player game over any multiplayer game.
Ethan Garcia
nothing, get a life, games are just a time sink
Landon Turner
Also when did I ever say Bloodborne is worse than DS2 or 3? The last 3 souls games have all been rehashes. The only big jump in the series was Demon's to dark since they changed the gameplay enough to justify a sequel. Bloodborne is also unbalanced as shit despite having far less weapons.
Grayson Sanchez
over half the game is held together by spit and string. name a section of bloodborne worse than izalith.
Brandon Cooper
The game is in alpha stages so the game is released in Alpha.
Even if I say this is true (it's not) that doesn't apply to the games listed.
Also it's amazing how you admit you didn't even play the games listed but think a rehashed Action RPG is better than a real RPG. No, that is your taste.
Isaac Brown
the classic "muh real rpg" argument. Always a classic. Sorry if it doesn't involve tabletop and giving your friends semen enemas, it's not a real rpg, ever. no matter what.
surprising no one, action games have better mechanics than strict rpgs, however. I think you're on the cusp of realizing something, but I'll leave you to figure that out.
Logan Long
CRPGs are the best RPGs ever created. Your casualized version of the genre isn't better kid.
Kevin Jackson
game of the year coming through
Parker Perez
no one is saying that you perpetually anally flustered mongoloid
the name of this game is a stupid play on Japanese game titles, and I'm still not convinced wayforward can make a proper, good game.
Samuel Parker
spoken like a true casual. Bloodborne's combat isn't very good. if I wanted to play a game for fast paced combat that is what UT is for which beats it far better. Hell divinity original sin has better combat. The souls games are no different from assassins creed at this point. Churned out quickly to sell to casuals.
Isaac Bailey

Lincoln Long
I kind of wonder if mustards think before they post.
we get it, you're upset someone doesn't like your shitty games.
Isaac Barnes
Oh and Bayonetta 2. Bayo has better comba and even writing.
Easton Wood
the wonderful 101 is better than both bayonetta 1 and 2.
Gavin Cruz
Except I own consoles. Look at my posts you brain dead console kid. I bought bayo 2 and bloodborne.
Oliver Torres
Spoken like a true retard, that sentence is practically incoherent.
Gavin Fisher

it's pretty hard to be too casual for the CRPG genre, a genre devoid of any actual skill. Get back to me when you can 1CC Cotton Boomerang, cassie
can you think of a coherent argument that isn't putting words in other peoples' mouths?
Austin Green
You were the idiot crying "mustard" only a fanboy would do that. You also don't like CRPGs and instead like shitty rehashed ones instead. So yeah, you are almost definitely a console drone.
Dominic Rogers
How cute. You lost the "it's released" argument and now you are crying about grammar.
Divinity OS is far harder than Dark souls.
Isaac Collins
dark souls isn't really a hard game, but it is better than divinity os. Isn't that an SJW game too? how sad.
CRPGs are a bad genre of games, just accept it. It's OK to like things I don't, I happen to like things which have mechanics that have a quality of mastery, deliberate level design and interesting combat. You happen to like dice rolls and comparing numbers, that's fine. My taste in games comes down to a more active taste in games, I prefer high energy, you prefer low energy. It's OK. Don't be so mad over it.
William Allen
You are correct
Henry Howard
Then why do you like Bloodborne so much. Sorry strategy is too hard for casuals. Also dice rolls are only a small part of most CRPGs. It's rarely determines victory or defeat. Of course a casual wouldn't know this.
Bentley Lewis
How? The rehashed, simple and repetitive combat?
Austin Robinson
Maybe you should take a break if you are just going to be mad on the side lines without making an argument.
Cameron Carter
comparing numbers isn't hard, it's boring. Simple math may be hard to you, but I like having a bit more action going on in my games.
many of the same reasons why dark souls is better than it too.
Grayson Moore
Oh and also Maybe people like more than one type of game? When I want strategy and story I play a CRPG. When I want fast paced high action that take twitch reaction I play UT and Bayo. Bloodborne doesn't really deliver on either of these.
Maybe you should take a break if every single person in the thread is telling you that you need to stop being retarded.
Joseph Martinez
Yeah. It's not positioning, turn order, ability use, planning ahead, ect. You got me. What an amazing non argument. At least with the first Dark souls the series was still fresh.
Noah Stewart
I think you're starting to realize people have preferences in games. Congratulations.
all of these are more interesting in more action oriented games. Sorry, it's true. Ninja Gaiden Black is a great one, for example.
Lucas Hill
This. Also in the case of multiplayer CRPGs you have team work, sneaking and communication. I died multiple times because my team work with my friend wasn't the best and we had different strategies on how to handle fights.
Lucas Nelson
I actually just beat Ninja Gaiden black 2 days ago and when the hell did it require strategy, turn order, abilityuse, ect? It was almost all my quick reaction times and how well I could read the enemy. It was a good game but you are retarded. Except you were the one trying to pretend CRPGs were bad. You prefer worse games apparently since there are far better action games than Bloodborne.
Joshua Flores
i forgot shovel knight, das bretty gud meng
Joseph Cruz
But there are better action games like Bayoneta 2 which shits all over Bloodborne's combat. If I want an RPG I can play a game with good RPG mechanics. If I want a good action game I can play a game with good action mechanics. Souls isn't shit but it should have stopped a long time ago. It's a corpse of a series now. All of it's charm is gone once you played the 5 souls game in only a little bit over one generation.
Dylan Baker
Super Mario 3D World Bayonetta 2 The Wonderful 101 Bloodborne Etrian Odyssey V Kirby: Planet Robobot Gravity Rush: Remastered (If that counts)
I can't be arsed listing all the games I played recently. I will play through Pikmin 3, Dong Freeze and Captain Toad after finishing all the levels in 3D World.
Ayden Bailey
So many people angry about Overwatch being a must play game. I bet its the same people crying against DotA2. RTSfags who are angry all because Starcraft 2 sucked dicks.
Nathan Reyes
This gen has mostly been forgettable. I'll probably replay bloodborne a few times over the years just because it's a unique (for video games) setting that I enjoy and you can just blast through the main story etc without many interruptions in gameplay.
Not sure if I'd call it a must play though, the chalice system is stupid, multiplayer was dao and build variety isn't really a thing. Demon's souls is still the souls game that had the most ambition and it was the first, every deviation since then has made it more streamlined and refined the mechanics, but not really introduced anything new.
