I wasn't paying attention

I wasn't paying attention.
What was the deal with Ouya?
How did it get almost 9 mil shekels on kickstarter alone?
What was the catch?
I thought it was "a console that lets you play (shitty) games on a tv" but isn't that every console?

Answer me.

*hugs you*

Not like this.

A shit console with almost no game support or good starting lineup that tried to compete with the super rich Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft crowd.

as for the 9 million, they probably had outside help.

*caressess your hair*
it's okay

We don't talk about Ouya.

Why don't you just forget about it and browse the Overwatchâ„¢ general?

It had all the power and capability of a shitty smart phone without the ability to make calls or play any smartphone games.

It was supposed to be a nice, simple, open, community-driven game console.
What it ended up being was phone hardware in a little box with a shitty slapped-together controller running on a phone OS that plays phone games on your TV.

More importantly, how the fuck are you this far behind?

I know what it is/was, what I don't get is how it got to 8mil on kikestarter, WHAT WAS THE BAIT
THE HOOK
THE BAZINGA

Actually, this is a far better question..

Does he know about Mighty No. 9? Did he hear what happened to Gawker?

…Does he know what happened to Prince and Bowie and Gene Wilder?

The Ouya devs probably got lucky and had an outside investor.

Hype from journos, before most people stopped trusting them entirely.
"Indie" hype before everyone realized that "indies" are just faggoty hipsters who make shitty games
Promised couch co-op and "free" games
Probably more than a few angel investors who were dead certain that this was going to be the next big thing in vidya, because not enough of them had been burned by investing in shitty tech startups.

Part of it was that Ouya happened in a time before Kickstarter was widely known as scam facilitating system.

i'm lonely

It was a shitty, cheap console that could play phone games on your TV nobody in the industry cared about. Retards deluded themselves into thinking this meant it could compete with the the big three and they could all play Skyrim on their indie hipster boxes. Also remember this was when KS projects could do no wrong.

When it turned out to be a shitty, cheap console that could play phone games on your TV nobody in the industry cared about, the retards lost their shit. We all had a laugh at their retardation. The end.

PLEASE DO NOT ACTUALLY BUY AN OUYA

Ah

I hope Ouya-tan will have a sister one day

That's a good point actually, the media pushed the shit out of it like it was the dawning of a new age. If GG had been around back then it would of been a gold mine for diggers.

what is a good price? so i can give her a good home

I don't think anyone ever came up with a term for it, but let's just call it "kickstarter culture" for now.

Mr Shitface's game was one of the first kickstarters to really demonstrate how people could easily get wrapped up in the hype of a kickstarter project. The game was already funded and the stretch goals were hit with ease, but people kept donating, some of them donating way more than they should have, because it felt like they were part of something big and important.

A good measure of it is that kickstarter allows certain people to buy their way into oldfag status. "Look I donated 5,000 dollarydoos! That means I'm so much more important to the community this game will surely have when it comes out!"

The other part of it is the unexpected phenomenon that people want to keep throwing money at something because they just want to see the numbers go higher. They justify it as thinking more money will somehow improve or speed up the project's development, but really, it's just some primitive skinner box shit where people let themselves get swept up in a frenzy of throwing money at a thing.

Please do not actually buy an Ouya. I understand how you feel completely.

If the Ouya was actually a cute little girl who was just trying her best, then I'd adopt her.

Instead, the Ouya is a shitty little box lies and corporate bullshit.

Being considered a person is such a big fucking meme these days.

Which is why nobody should buy one.

The money it raised and attention it got had to do with Microsoft's attempt at using video games in the US education system;

It seems too ridiculous to believe but it's true. The idea was to make the Ouya the platform for low cost indies and educational games to displace the emerging Google Play Store and Apple App Store as the first phase. Like many of their schemes in the last decade everything unravelled after launch due to incompetence.

The second phase was turning violent misogynistic video games for socially maladjusted losers into progressive 'interactive digital entertainment' for a modern sophisticated clientele which resulted in gamergate being created. Without the image of gaming being changed getting politicians to support their efforts would be impossible.

Are we going to have VR-tan porn when it bombs like Ouya?

You can't just hijack a multi-million dollar industry overnight like that. You can see the various hooks they have in the industry, but market realities are what they are for a reason. Men like explosions, tits and violence and they are the primary market for video games.

Its also fucking retarded because movies, for all the shit they have now, at least have to pretend to market towards the groups they obviously hate. They still include sex, violence and the like, yet they have a much more "sophisticated" image than games.

Money laundering.

Had Sony or Nintendo went along with it back in the early 2000's yes they could. If it weren't for the Japanese industry that has very strict ownership rules and prohibits takeovers by foreign firms Microsoft would have complete control over video gaming decades ago.

The only reason the xbox exists is because Sony said no to them over having Windows on their Playstation consoles and Nintendo didn't want to work with them. Sega only had a Windows CE logo on their Dreamcast because they desperately needed the money at the time, nobody used those development tools.

As for the image problem the first step was making everyone aware that there was a problem, even if largely imaginary, not to fix it. On this front they succeeded. The goal was never to change the nature of the gaming industry only the public's perception to make its use in education more appealing.

...

Microsoft is burning money in vidya since they entered the market. They are just there to destroy everything.

This shit is actually making me too depressed.

they actually made money with the xcock 36"

They could waste a hundred billion, if it means getting their software into the US educational system(and later world wide) that would ensure trillions in revenue over several decades and a monopolistic position that can't be challenged. That 'one laptop per child' project was destroyed by them because it threatened their plans.

It's a very safe bet, they need to spend that money anyways or they get heavily taxed on it. For example when they bought Mojang for 2 billion it ended up saving them money.

I doubt it, there was one or two annual reports where they said online revenue put operating profits in the black for that specific division but overall it was a disaster.

And don't forget the incredibly expensive RROD recall.

Thinking back the Ouya was sold as a platform for independent game makers with every $99 console being a development kit with no licensing fees or barrier to distribute software on it. No other console did this as the inevitable stream of worthless shit that would flood it means you end up with a worthless brand, which is exactly what happened.

They tried to promote higher quality projects by matching $50,000 of funding on kickstarter for 6 months of exclusivity but ignored obvious scams that tried to abuse this fund. Eventually people who tried to expose it came to the realization that it was legal money laundering done out in the open.

Nobody ever tried to build a tunnel between Newfoundland and Ireland either.

Why are gamers so incredibly fucking dumb? Microsoft spent BILLIONS making and marketing the original Xbox in 2001.

What the hell do you expect from a 99 dollar box that doesn't have a giant corporation backing it?! How is something like that ever going to challenge a PlayStation?!

History lesson:

MS wanted to conquer the living room with a media box.

But grandpa we have the Roku and Fire tv stick and mini PCs!
If only MS had known.

(I nearly died from laughter when the Xbox One was revealed: TV pass through).

There was their clandestine open-source XBMC project that eventually turned into Kodi. This is a common tactic; they have their employees start open-source projects for their hardware or fund them either admitting it if successful(libre Kinect drivers) or bury it if the project doesn't work out as intended.

Right now Kodi is over 10 times more popular than their xbone console and they had to kill off their Windows Media Center. It helped fragment the set-top box market so neither Google or Apple could claim dominance but it was at an enormous cost.

They didn't only see cheap media boxes with limited gaming capabilities on the horizon they were heavily involved in creating them.
