A word of advice here OP. Video game development is a low-paying and ultimately unfulfilling career that you don't want to get into. Just because you like video games doesn't mean you'll be any good making them, which requires actual programming skill and likely art skills that can honestly make you way more money working in some other field. If you are really serious about wasting your life making shitty COD clones for EA then literally quit video games and learn to program.

You should be willing to play new games and always maintain a hand on the pulse of the indie scene, but trying to conform your actual tastes to that of our internet clique is a futile and worthless endeavor. If you try new stuff you'll find things you like and dislike about a given game irrespective of a third-party opinion. One of the marks of a good game designer is the ability to isolate these observations as well as understand how and why they work in the context of the game's mechanics.

Irrespective of whatever the aspies on this board say, you don't even need to force yourself to complete games if you don't like them. Just get far enough to grok the core mechanics and to have an intuitive understanding of them. But never stop playing new games or revisiting the classics that you never got to experience.

Secondly, while a "video game design course" can be useful, you are going to need tangible skills in order to get a foot in the game (post I wrote on this topic 8ch.net/cyber/res/42433.html#q42815).

Finally, start making games. While you begin to acquire what is going to be an admittedly basic skillset in regards to programming and art, you're probably going to want to cut your teeth on creating tabletop games. Familiarize yourself with the rulesets and formats of various table top games and try to build your own with markers and a ruler. Most of the techniques you learn won't directly segue into video game design but the important thing is that you're beginning to train your mind and build a pathology for designing games.
