All the issues of balancing different gun types is easily handled by making levels big enough that 600m+ engagements happen and adding a weapon weight based stamina / movement system.
Now every gun was a use for the same reason they do in reality.

We all know video games aren't realistic for dick, what is it about guns that spurs this demand for absolute realism ?
