Well, since Japan has their heads stuck up so far up their asses when it comes to comedy, when something appallingly inferior like OPM is released and it happens to set the bar despite its inept and embarrassingly clumsy attempt at humor, there's a bit of problem with the country's *entire culture*.

In other words, people like OPM because there's literally nothing in the medium that surpasses it. It's not the "best", it's the "least worst".

It's got a halfway competent story and looks good for something animated on a shoestring budget. It also inspired a lot of shit that went into the alpha series. How many other adaptations were so good that the original devs decided to steal from it?

One for the old-timers here: Pole Position was one of the earliest vidya-based toons. It was a pretty nice adventure show, quite well-done, a bit better than the typical 80s fare. Thing is, the game was an Formula 1 arcade racer without any plot, so they had pretty much nothing in common.

Well, the key is that the plot is different.
In Sword Art Online, Kirito is made out to be the chosen one, and his struggles are mostly physical. In other words, he's super powerful and has to perform feats of power. Why this is boring should be obvious.

In Overlord, Ainz is supremely powerful, but the plot is not about him engaging in power struggles. Following just the arcs in the anime, it's about him trying to use his power to gain influence without causing mass chaos by revealing everything at once. It's about him spectating the struggles and failures of others, knowing a single intervention could have saved the lives of people he cared about, yet also coming to grips with the fact that his morality is no longer human in nature.
