If you really want to play it safe, you can upgrade to LUMA and then do the whole Arm9 process.
There's a guide in the OP of the 3ds piracy thread. It works as long as you can still downgrade/upgrade (and you're on the right system firmware, so you can)
You should grab the newest downgrader/upgrader though. And make sure your system files are the right region when you try to downgrade/upgrade. It's one of the few ways to actually brick now
