It's my favourite, but not the greatest. It has quite a few bugs, one of the mainline quests can be 100% broken if you talk to a guy before doing the quest.

Skyrim exists though?

obliffun is better
that's why it's called oblifFUN

So what's greater?

...

Casual.

...

Step your game up nigger

Don't you mean 20 years?

Depends on what you value. What makes Morrowind good is that everything it does have is good, aside from stealth, but it's not great in any single field. There are games with better story, with better gameplay, with better exploration, but Morrowind has solid implementations of most features put together in a fairly good package.

It's a shame I can't get either Gothic games working on Linux.

Not really. Morrowind has better world design, UI, lore, quests, freedom, and everything except graphics and combat animation.

Go play chess.

There's so little freedom in this game. Too "linear" for my taste even if it's not linear. The dialogs are well written and the choices are intriguing, but I find the lore uninteresting.

No, I don't believe you. Discovering vivec and learning to levitate are one of the greatest video game experiences ever.

I could never get into Daggerfall. The game was a mess, the dungeoning worse than UW somehow, the massive amount of procedural generation made the game feel boring, the landscape was more of an overworld than Oblivion, the towns were way too big for having only 5 or so real residents, etc.. And it wasn't talked about much until the last 5 years or so for some mysterious reason. I think it's like Planescape: Torment in that it was posthumously declared a 'greatest of all time' by people who never finished it and weren't alive when it released.

Daggerfall had better character creation much more options the ability to take weaknesses and strengths was awesome.

Daggerfall is a great game, but it lacks content. The people look all the same, building interiors look all the same, and the weapon sprites too. The dungeons are way too big and complex for their own sake, and recall spell isn't easy to get unlike in Morrowind. The UI is pretty bad too. But they're all mostly caused by technological limitations though. If only someone would follow and improve it's amazing formula.

Is that even possible?

Yeah, even had multiple endings, one for each of the people who finished it.

I was there when Planscape came out. It was a fuckin great game and all ye olde printed game press gave it great reviews. It was praised as the best and raising the bars after Baldur's Gate, so high that it would have been imposible to beat it. Despite great reviews and critical acclaim it didn't sold well. But, still it was declared "great" at launch.

I can't get Gothic II working on even Windows. I bought the physical version brand new for $5, it didn't work. I pirated the GOG version, it didn't work. Eventually I broke down and bought the Steam, and that doesn't work either. I just don't care anymore.

Heres your (you)

It worked on win xp. The controls are shit though, and there's still no way to fix that.

There is a work in progress reimplementation ala OpenMW for Gothic I and II, but it's hardly playable unlike OpenMW.

If you play vanilla, expect buggy flavor

Ahh, the cross between Memetcher 3, Fable and Thief. I prefer SS2 to that game

Daggerfall is close but it's buggy and the quests/cities are kinda lifeless.

They Deus Ex'd it but the endings were cool. Orcs for example were always enemy mobs and not part of the Empire prior to one of the endings of Daggerfall.

Overrated piece of shit game with terrible combat and a bland boring world. The lore about the Nerevarine or whatever was literally the only interesting thing about it.

YEA THE GAMEPLAY IN MORROWIND WAS SO BAD AND HARD, LOL. SKYRIM IS SO MUCH BETTER.
I'D PLAY OBLIVION ALSO (DIFFICULT SLIDER AT 0 OFC BC ITS TOO HARD =D) BUT IT FEELS WEIRD PLAYING OLD GAMES IN CURRENT YEAR XD

Morrowind really isn't that great.

None of the TES games are.

Did you go through troubleshooting ala "run in Window XP" compatibility mode and run as admin?

top cucks

Shit game with shit combat.
Never had a chance. Wizardry 8 eats this game and shits it out for breakfast.

Fine taste in videogames fellow anonymous person.

Yep. Skyrim is when the series actually began. Glad Bethesda got rid of that hack fraud Kirkbride. He was huffing some kind of paint when writing "Morrowind" and holding back Todd from managing his dream project.

Why? It's your standard RNG combat.

Even if the lore isn't your thing, the world design is extremely interesting. It has a lot of diverse architecture and society.

Only if you're an autistic RPG buff maybe.

Any Shin Megami Tensei is better than Morrowind, though.

nah

That's not Fallout 2.

I prefer Daggerfall, personally.

...

Well yes user, that's the whole point. Like you say, an informed person would recognize morrowind for the pile of garbage it is, much like all bethesda games, and know that there are other much better RPG's.

Better dialogues, but not better gameplay, customization, and exploration. You can't even buy experience points (hire trainers).

Other RPG's might have more complex RPG mechanics, but they're nowhere as fun. Where else can you get 300 strength buff and jump like hulk without cheats? Morrowind also has a lot of verticality and exploration, every inch can be explored. Or interesting places with alien like architecture such as Vivec, Ald Ruhn, and Tel Fyr. The ecosystem is interesting too. It's not found in other RPG games.

...

Thanks todd.

I suppose you can name one that's better? Go on I'll wait.

Gothic
Gothic 2
Wizardry 1-8
Might and Magic 1-7

There's 17 RPG's that are better than morrowshit.

Well done, OP. Well done.

Played those. Great quests, great NPC interaction, mediocre gameplay.

They have some of the silliest lore ever. I find them pretty boring too. 8 was decent, but not as good as Morrowind.

I like 6 and 7, not as boring as Wizardry, but still not as good as morrowind.

Also, they all look and control like shit. Morrowind is probably the first fantasy RPG game with perfect FPS controls and handy and accessible UI. Having a crosshair and e key to pick up items and interact with objects was like a dream. The customizeable hotkeys are great too.

these are bullshit

You can train in Fallout.
Combat and customization are all sorts of better in Fallout.
I'll give you exploration, since Morrowind is 3D game, but in all other aspects is sucks Fallout off.

If people criticize TW3 for having merely mediocre combat, then that goes double for Morrowind which has even worse AI and combat system.

That's why I'm waiting for OpenMW to be finished. One of the games I couldn't get into.

Far from the best RPG. There is others I would list.

/thread

No.

No weapon and armor enchanting, no potion creating, hard to level up skills. Combat might be more strategic, but also slow, boring, and turn based.

For the dialogs only, which is very fun. The story and lore are an ass, the controls are gay, and the graphics look a kind of bland.

I like it.

Morrowind's combat is simple, but effective. The AI's suck at pathfinding and artificial life, but not at making combat strategy.

...

What do you mean? In Fallout 2 in literally the first town you meet you can talk to a dude in pub and if you say right things he will teach you basics of boxing, increasing your unarmed combat skill.
There are plenty of masters and trainers in Fallout games.

Which does jackshit. You jump higher or do heavier damage. Can rip dude's arm off with magic and kill him with it? Of course not, not even with mods.

Now you're outright bating, apply yourself.

Bait as you will, it's true non the less.

We can fight about gameplay, but I don't wanna have another MISS MISS MISS argument. Instead, how about we talk about the Divine.
When it comes to depth and Truth in fiction, I think no games can rival Planescape and Morrowind. But due to the sheer depth and possibility to interpret the setting, Morrowind wins. These two games are not great games just in the vein of DMC or Serious Sam. They're also experiences that stay with you the rest of your life. They produce meaning, which beyond the open sandbox mechanics of Morrowind (which were never successfully replicated in any game since) is something only great works of art manage to do.

Morrowind and gothic (especially gothic 2) are about the same level of quality to me. I would recommend someone plays both and desciphers their exact tastes, because it can be a varied experience depending on how you are. If you're like me you'll love and be heavily engaged in both.

I don't think you've played Morrowind if you think it does "jackshit". It changes the way game is played on a fundamental level. The way you travel, the way you prepare for battles, how you react to various situations and how you roleplay.

Just want to mention you can indeed kill people with limbs for weapons. You just can't rip it off an npc. Haven't searched for mods tho. I never wanted to do such a thing. Too edgelordy even for my edgelord characters.

Its like you want to get bullied.

Move aside, niggers.

Are those mario RPGs even worth playinh?

Of course not, unless you developed some mental illness like most nintendo fans did.

& if im drunk?

Do you need an excuse to play a shitty rpg that badly?

Yes

Paper mario 1 and 2 and the mario and luigi games are. I'm not a big fan of the snes one.

Then no it's not. Play something better even if you're drunk.

PLEASE HELP

My condolences for not having a proper understanding of what constitutes "fun."

Sage because they aren't comparable to full-fledged RPGs like Morrowind

...

Gothic 1 or 2, depending on taste, are better games in the sub-genre.

Must be even worse than Daggerfall with mouselook.

I don't remember this. I remember being teached kung fu some san francisco chink though. Also, they only teach you once and they can't help you to level up. It's nothing like Morrowind where grinding golds is the most effective way of leveling up.

Being stronger in RPG games does jackshit?

Prove me wrong, tard.

Excuse me, but I wouldn't call video games art.

It's people like you who get bullied at school though.

no

Neither did I. You're virtue signaling with this kneejerk response.

No

yes

Sorry, I just wanted to give your great post a (you).

Is Arktwend worth playing? I didn't realize it was in English and ignored it for years.

Name one good JRPG that isn't gay as fuck, boring or porn.

Chrono trigger/chrono cross

i restle my cas4

There's plenty of games that have shitty gameplay for people who are retarded and incompetent because they can't figure out how to properly use the systems

RPG is a very unfortunate name for everything in this genre, Morrowind and Dragon's Dogma should absolutely not be described in the same category of games yet they are. Anyone who thinks shitty combat is a big deal in Morrowind clearly hasn't played the game enough to realize that you are almost never in combat. The majority of quests are just about exploring and talking to people. Combat is as much of a gameplay mechanic as the alchemy system is and I'd say they're equally poorly implemented.

Besides, the gameplay does have one huge thing going for it which would be the magic system. The chance based stuff is gay, but I dare you to name a game with cooler spell customization. I can make a spell that turns the movement system into that of Saints Row 4's, I can make spells to do all sorts of non combat tasks like charming people, opening locks, or changing any of my stats. Morrowind is the best game ever made for making you feel like a proper wizard, it has the best writing/setting of any game I've played, and it has superb art direction and music. You can absolutely believe that another RPG is better and you'd be correct, but anyone who can't see why someone would prefer it over everything else is either a gigantic hipstercuck or a retard.

On gameplay and scale it's clearly better, but Morrowind has vastly better art direction, writing, and world. I can sympathize with people that prefer Daggerfall but I personally think Morrowind was significantly better.

;_: fuck you Tolkien i hate you

Reminder JRR tolkien is pro-white

Well it's Tolkienshit, Star Wars clones, VTM, or Bloodborne.

Can anyone think of any RPGs that aren't similar to or derivative of the above 4? And before Witcherfags start posting, just because you have a couple celtic monsters doesn't excuse the gay Tolkienshit races that make up 90% of the game.

see

Also a reminder he was Catholic. Tolkien correspondence with CS Lewis turned him into a barely Anglican Catholicboo.
When we're talking about the best certain arts can offer, Mozart and Beethoven were also Catholic.
So was Michelangelo, the greatest sculptor of all time.
In regards to painting, we've got Caravaggio, also a Catholic and Rembrandt who we're not sure if he was Catholic or Dutch Protestant.
And they were all pro-white fam :^)

At least one person with some resemblance of good taste.

what is wrong with you/ play gothic 3 though i prmomise its worththe effort its' actually fun

Well, fear no more, fellow gamers. Skyrim 2 will bring a whole new twists and will show you what the word fantasy means.

Preorder the preorder now.

can i pls have more of these?

literally just torrented and downloaded morrowind, Is it worth playing without mods or should i just get shit done b4 even jumping in.

*installed

what bthe fuck ha ve you dont with your life lad

Alpha Protocol.

All of TES games are fucking horrible.

It's just that Morrowind is less horrible than the rest of them.

I ONLY play COD games Faggot, Get Gud or Go HOme. If you had any mount of Sweg ud be Apprehensive to Try A FUCKING RPG Especially bcuz i Can't talk to my HUGE Clusters of friends on xbone live.

Idk if it's the nsame feeling now but when i bought that collection of morrowind in what, 2007ish. it felt satisfyig. like giving money to company that has chances in the future, you know? now when is ee bloodmoon i feel despair. sure the mdos for morrrowind have eeen coming along but still, fuck anything that goes toward howard

feel ya, Im very happy i bought KOTOR and KOTOR 2 in disk form.

i feel liike i did the universe wtrong

It's beautiful. It really is. I even re-bought them off steam so i could have legitimate copies on my pc and the 2 xbox orignals in disc form. that and it was like 3 dollar for the downloads.

don't worry i played it with mods, unless there's somesignificant update to all that shit, should I play it again?

On the contrary, I feel the opposite. I see a lot of people criticize it when comparing it to state of the art 10 years later. When it came out, it was mindblowing stuff. It had problems, but why do people treat it so terribly for being "buggy" while simutlaneously giving modern Bethesda games a pass?

I know it's not really fair, but every time I see people shit on Daggerfall, my first instinct is to assume they're a newfag who wasn't actually around for the DOS gaming era to understand how much Daggerfall was pushing the envelope.

To put things in perspective, it had a development time of about 2 years. Fallout 4 had 4 years. Just… think about that for a moment.

Why do people do this.

Morrowind was made when Christopher Weaver was still the CEO. Now that he has been kicked out of Zenimax by Altman, all Beth games suddenly turned into bland shit with overly long development time. I don't know if Todd is not innocent, but there are people in Bethesda that are far more guilty. Hell, Todd created perfectly fine games before Altman.

What the fuck did todd ever d before being suddely foisted upno all ES'ers as the god of TES?

He was an intern in the Daggerfall days. It's hard to imagine how someone who learned the ropes working on such great games then went on to create such trash, but I guess $$$ talks.

Morrowind is shit.
Daggerfall is the one singular good Elder Scrolls game.

I just assume TES and Fallout games will just piss me off until it's modded at this point. Thanks todd.

Have you ever enjoyed the menu system in skyrim? Ever? what about the ENB?

That's the price of procedural generation. You can create a universe but it just feels lacking and the same.

Let's just hope that future game developers wouldn't fall into this trap.

He directed the CD version of Arena, directed Terminator FPS games (which I love very much), designed Daggerfall, directed TES Adventures Redguard.

so, he went from making shoddy pots to making shoddy ports? now his transitions doesn't shock me so

What's funny is it seems to be going backwards. Daggerfall used procedural generation, yeah, but it also had a fuckton of custom content. Now we have modern games (I'm looking at you NMS) that just throw out procedural generation without any tweaking or custom content and call it a day, acting as if we should be impressed by tech that is literally decades old and was done even better decades ago.

Not really. These days, you can put more content in games. Daggerfall had engine limitations.

kys man

what game are you talking about?

I'm probably being tongue-in-cheek condsdering I dont know how to cactually find the 2nd dungeon i daggerfallg

I don't mean that as an insult to Tolkien, LotR is absolutely fantastic. It's an insult to the mindless derivative clones that just copy/paste everything from Tolkien without understanding why it existed in his setting.

Kickbranch was still there for Skyrim, that's why Fallout 4 is Game of All Time and Skyrim isn't.

Fallout New Vegas > Any Elder Scrolls game

Don't you find it humiliating? Is this how you see yourself?

It's proclaimed a greatest of all time by people who have actually played it for hundreds of hours compared to your two in the tutorial dungeon where you got lost and quit because you suck.

Bad taste.

It has bugs like every Bethesda game, that's as far as I will give you regarding it being a "mess."

It controls far better than UW (if you bother to set your controls up WASD and turn off using the cursor for movement)

I was alive when Daggerfall released, but I actually didn't get to start playing it until Bethesda released it for free. It isn't really an easy game to find hard copies of.

...

Ridiculous claim.

ADHD casual

Any mage guild sells a recall spell and mage guilds are found in pretty much any city large enough to have guilds.

Because making thousands of sprites (instead of just hundreds) for NPCs/monsters isn't as easy as auto generating potato faced generic npcs.

Did you even bother setting it up? I bet you leave the redundant HUD up instead of turning it to fullscreen huh? Other than that the only clunky shit (other than the map) is the inventory system, and even that isn't hard to get used to.

I get the feeling that faggots like you are incapable of getting the feel for a game unless it plays exactly like some other game you already want to play instead.

Now is Daggerfall perfect? No, besides the bugs (which can be minimized/eliminated for the most part), the dungeon map sucks, some things to add a bit more life to dungeons could be added, same for the wilderness, and the alchemy system needs redone. Those are the only real legitimate complaints. Complaining that this huge 62k+ world isn't hand crafted enough is simply retarded when nearly ever example of handcrafted you shits accept are just as fucking generic only with shaders and shadows and other shit to distract your soft brains with.

Not him, but let me chime in. The biggest problem that Daggerfall has, which basically ruins it, is that, well procedural and random generation a fucking shit

Daggerfall? More like Hardcore Shitposter's Sky

Procedural and random generation are code buzzwords for terrible level design, no immersion and boring.

Shit opinion. There isn't a lot wrong with Daggerfall's procedural "random" generation other than occasionally dropping npcs/items through the floor of a dungeon and into the void. "hand crafted" usually means small with few options, where as Daggerfall's large procedural generated dungeons are actual adventures in themselves, not five minute hallways.

You are a faggot and you need to KYS, but not before you take all the other faggots spewing this meme with you. There is nothing wrong with procedural generation when it is done right, and Daggerfall did it mostly right.

I've had more fun in Daggerfall's dungeons which actually feel large and intimidating than any other dungeon in any other RPG I have ever played. That's really saying something too when 80% of Daggerfall's dungeon rooms are empty.

Does anyone have that screencap of the guy who does a long explanation as to why Morrowind is a poor successor to Daggerfall and how despite how more pretty it was deep down it was an overall more dumbed down game and was taking the series in the wrong direction?
It really is funny how low the standards are for the gaming industry when people were complaining even then about what is now lauded as a masterpiece

Yeah Baldur's Gate was pretty good OP.

I don't have the image you're talking about, but I lived through that era. Morrowind was VERY controversial on, for example, the RPG Codex when it first came out. I find it baffling that people now treat it as the first real RPG ever made, and the best RPG ever. It's just absurd. Morrowind is the halfway house of consolization between Daggerfall (untainted DOS era design) and Oblivion (peak console-itis).

If I am feeling generous, I will assume the people who trumpet it as all the aforementioned things are just poor newfags who aren't aware of how wrong they are, rather than oldfags who have lost all their common sense.

Morowind is an open world RPG, not a sandbox. Mount and Blade would be an example of a sandbox RPG.

Nice try, Todd.

sandboxgamesdb.com/games/the-elder-scrolls-iii-morrowind/

Being stuck in a box and having to make fun of the toys available is the very definition of it.

What makes sandboxgamedb the ultimate authority on sandbox games? It appears to also list Civ IV, Far Cry Primal and 8 Bit Armies and that's just page 1 of 13. Clearly it is not a reliable test for what is and is not a sandbox game.

A true sandbox game does not have a set story or quests. It gives you the barest semblance of rules and lets you do shit from there on your own initiative. An open world game gives you structured content that is simply accessible in any order.

It's true though. Morrowind's world is open world, but its mechanics are sandbox based. You can make such weird enchanting and magic combinations that devs never intended, but allowed you to just because.

Morrowind is an example of sandbox RPG done right.

This still does not make it a sandbox rpg. It's simply an open world rpg with an expansive magic system. Now there's nothing inherently bad about an open world game despite modern ones being shit but the distinction exists for a reason.

Oblivion

TIL sandbox and open world mean two different things to people who don't know what they're talking about

Fuck off back to reddit you damn retard.

If by "still there" you mean he consulted the team on lore a couple times then sure. In fact, any proper teslore autist can tell you that Skyrim was very respectful to the series' lore and all of its problems with writing was the more immediate stuff like dialogue, plot, and characters.

You rang?

Good joke m8

No.

The sprites and walls lack variation. The weaponry doesn't as varied as Morrowind because they're all level scaled in their acquisition.

But it is true that the dungeons are too complex. Maybe the dungeons wouldn't be so torturing if the recall spell was as easy to cast as Morrowind.

It's still not easy to cast, you'd need some decent magic points to cast it.

Sprites are uglier.

It still sucks even at full screen. It's just clunky as you said. Very clunky.

Don't get me wrong, I love Daggerfall, but it's not a perfect game unlike Morrowind.
