To convert to Judaism, before you take the first step (how to Jew 101), you need to talk with a rabbi and do spiritual and literal paperwork. After the classes (I think 3 years), you need to do more paperwork (literal and spiritual).
At any point of the process, you can get dropped out. The only way to guarantee this doesn't happen is:
1) have a personal relationship with the rabbi, so no backstabbing
2) pay shekels to keep xenophobic faggots from taking your denomination away (think of a burger here regarding Mexican immigration)
