The DSC is only one component of R21. DSC sends your GPS location out to the R21 system if your radio has that capability.Most do not. That part never caught on. R21 is mainly used today for direction finding with plain old multi-tower triangulation because 99% of the people are running plain analog radios. Modulation scheme doesn't matter. The operator can select the FM channel or pick a carrier out of a spectrum view.

Cheap hobbyist SDR's can sample and archive 30mhz of bandwidth simultaneously. You think a $120K General Dynamics SDR can't sample 8Mhz? Don't think DHS wont spend a few bucks on storage space for those files?

CB and some VHF/UHF bands don't require a license, meaning that you can operate them with some things in mind. There's also a good shtf thread on /k/ with comms info. Eventually I hope that this becomes a dixie wide operation where we have biweekly cb net to pass info off the internet. CB is cheap and easy since there's lots of used equipment in good condition floating around craigslist, 100$ would get you on the air and youtube has good intros too.

Baofengs are good for about 15 miles if you get the BFF9 V2+, but a UR5R V2+ will get you about 10 miles transmit with an upgraded antenna. A good CB rig (radio, antenna, power supply) will run you about 100$ and I would argue that its more important to have as a mobile baofeng or wouxun, but the latter are cheaper and easier to set up and operate.

Surf City is legit, They have a nice beach and arcade near the ocean. Morehead City is a nice little NE style fisherman's town. Emerald Isle and Chalotte are your best bets for Officer daughters and civie dixie girls though.
