It's quite simple, really.
What ends up happening is that people want to see that number go up. After all, isn't that what video games are all about?
When players hit their plateau, it can be crushing for them if they don't realize that the number isn't meant to keep going up unless they improve.
This is why so many people decide to smurf. They wanna go back to a time when the number kept going up and they could score easy wins without having to actually improve their own abilities.
The salt that comes from winning is just the byproduct of a power trip they experience when they finally go back to being able to win consistently.
