Well yeah, you're right about that. It was fun at the time but the VN itself is pretty mediocre. It only has two good routes, Hisao's character is really inconsistent, and the writing gets overly melodramatic in places.
I think the reason a lot of people, myself included, liked it so much was that is was their first VN. Having read others since then I can safely say that it's nothing special.

As another user said, the game itself is nothing special. Too melodramatic in some places, nonensical in others, Hisao is bad as a protagonist as he's not developed enough to be his own character, and not exactly transparent enough for others to properly self-insert as him. Not to mention no librarian, no Misha route, and only one dead end where Hisao dies when there should have been at least six.

I am about to start the Katawa Shoujo Alpha build. Do I bother playing the full thing or just jump to certain chapters for characters? ie. how different is it from the final release?

Lilly -> Hanako's route (All endings) -> Hanako's true route

I will warn you, Hanako's route is a fucking wild ride, but it makes the true route so much sweeter in the end.
