It has some problems.

30fps instead of 60 is a stupid choice for a high speed action game.

No invincibility on dodging unless you buy an upgrade that just makes you invincible to projectiles (and even then it's wonky, it starts after the dodge starts and there's like almost a solid 1/4 of a second when you can still be hit) doesn't work very well.

Seems to be no invincibility after you're hit either, or the timeframe for it is super short to the point of almost being null.

The developers of this game seemed to look atht the tested, tried and true standard design elements of most games in this genre and went like "We don't need this, we're gonna do things OUR way, we're gonna be UNIQUE".
But what they failed to understand is that those elements are standard for a reason, it's because they work.
Iframing while dodging promotes an aggressive playstyle, dodging AROUND projectiles and attacks or having to mind a very strict timing on the dodge iframe itself means you'll have to do tons of repositioning that slows down the action unnecessarily.
No grace period after a hit, or a very short, insignificant grace period after a hit, means that you can get stunlocked to your death by multiple enemies, wich leads to a more careful approach that also slows down the action.

Overall this game reeks of arrogance by the devs, they made this thinking they knew better than everyone else in the industry and that their solution was the superior choice, but it really wasn't, the game suffers from stupid mechanical decisions that bring down what could've otherwise been a pretty fun fast paced action game.

They're all pretty easy to fix too, in theory you could fix this game in terms of gameplay with just a couple of tweaks, it wouldn't be impossible for either fans, or the devs themselves to do a re-release with mechanical improvements.

The hardest part is the 30fps problem, that would require a shit ton of work to fix, and it'll probably never happen.

I like the colors but I haven't played it.

I've played the unpatched game and the patched version and i haven't noticed any differences.
It's a hard game, but it's not hard because of the enemy placement, the bosses, or the attack patterns, it's simply hard because it lacks iframes in general so you have to physically steer clear of all attacks most of the time.
Also you have a pretty small HP pool and every hit from anything drops it down one notch, while other attacks drop it down multiple notches.
HP recovery items aren't super rare, but they're spaced out just far enough to be annoying if you're not on top of your game most of the time.

It's a game that ends up being hard for the wrong reasons, essentially, it's the result of a lot of design decisions that are more frustrating than legitimately challenging.

There's no "making it easy", there's just fixing it, by adding iframes for more actions, it's a simple solution.

Just wait another day or two to make the thread again. The Underail thread got this treatment too but last i saw the thread was in pretty good shape

Dude, the animations themselves are at 30fps, that's not how this works.
You'd have to literally draw the additional frames of animations.
If you just double the speed you'll have just that, a game that runs at double the speed, it would be the same exact game but nearly unplayable because everything goes sanic.

If this was a 3D game or it used a different type of 2D animation it would be easy, but as it stands it's actually pretty hard to bump it to 60, you'll have to get the original artists and drawn the in between animations for everything to adapt it to 60.

I like the concept art and cover art, but I'm getting sick of that fake retro pixel art style in game. Things like thin stick limbs, lazy jaggies masquerading as an artistic choice, then add pixel bloom. It's unfortunate because some of these games, their gameplay might not be perfect but it looks interesting enough. Eitr And I'm usually easygoing with the artstyle. But I'm getting really fed up with this retro pixel stuff.

Pro: I love how they made the entire game a massive proof of "Show, don't tell". The only text is in the main menu and a few tutorials here and there. Past the first thirty minutes there is zero text at all in the entire game and you can get the full story by just paying attention.

Dashing is janky. Sometimes you smoothly get multiple dodges and sometimes you fail for some reason. 30fps in a fast-moving game where split-second decisions and slashing bullets back at foes is a possibility is inexcuseable. The game freezes all of the action for cutscenes and goes back to it without warning. I did not feel like I die because the game is fair but rather because the game is fucking bullshit. You have two control systems but neither of them are optimal - keyboard and mouse sucks when it comes to skillful movement and sword combat but gamepad is terrible for aiming and shooting with your gun, and both are crucial parts of the game but you will be gimped one way or another. New Game + locks you out at two hp maximum making the game even more frustrating to play. I felt zero incentive to play again in these circumstances and zero incentive to explore the rest of the map after defeating the final boss. Hidden rooms and secrets are all encountered the same way AKA hug every single wall and see if you can somehow walk through it making finding them a frustrating endeavor of combing every single room instead of something found through observation and reasoning.

To call this shit would be a disservice to feces which at least serve to nourish the earth. This is radioactive waste.

Bullshit, in GM studio you can slow down the sprite animations with a single variable, so you double the framerate but set the sprite speed to half and all animations will look the same. The real problem is the movement, they would have to hunt for all movement in the code and halve the numbers.

Well before I go into any assumptions, did they really waste their time animating every single frame for an action over 30 frames? The animations didn't look remotely smooth enough for that the last time I looked at the game.

A running animation for a spite game is usually 8 frames of sprites for example. 16 if they really want things smooth.
The last thing that matters about the framerate in a 2D game is the animation fluidity, as it doesn't change at all until it's unplayably low. What matters is the resolution of input polling and how soon the game responds to that. Making the game more responsive basically.
You do actually get a little visually fluidity as the entities themselves move across the screen more smoothly, but not the animations themselves.

If everything is multiplied by the change in time for the frame like it should be then nothing like that would happen. When you hear about that happening for some game port you see the devs getting berated for a reason.

Backed it before I had learnt better, played it, enjoyed it, probably won't touch it again.

My thoughts.

1) The colour palette is OK, but the lack of differentiation between foreground (player, enemies, obstacles) and background is a pain in the ass.

2) The decision to stick with a 30fps frame cap is stupid, and even worse the devs tied game logic to 30fps because they are fucking retards.

3) Some shit don't work. Don't know if it's been fixed since launch, but dodges were buggy and sometimes had iFrames, sometimes didn't.

4) Lack of enemy variety was an issue, and overall the game didn't last very long, which wouldn't be a problem if it had some sort of replay value aside from collecting more power-ups you don't need because you've already beaten the game without them.

5) I did like the minimalism and the lack of hand-holding, and the gobbledegook the aliens spoke that made the world feel properly alien and lonely, even though you weren't exactly alone.

It's a decent buy if it's cheap and you like 2D Zelda games.

I know nothing about the development of the game, i played it, it was really a lot of fun for me and it looked fantastic. I did like the lack of i frames, made combat interesting, the game is easy enough once you get the dash upgrade

Who the fuck animates all drawn sprites at 60 fps? You'd end up with fuckhuge sprites that take a million years to animate, do you actually pay attention to the number of frames in most sprite-based 60fps games?

60 fps is not about having more frames in the sprites, but about the movement of objects across the screen being smoother and about the controls being more responsive.

That's how it works in any 2D game because the animations aren't drawn across all of 30 or 60 frames to begin with. They don't evenly divide into multiples of 10 most of the time either.
Scaling animations is the name of the game for 2D games. Whether it's 25, 46, or 51 it should look about the same.

Of course a dev should make sure the game's performance hits 60fps easily and consistently at minimum, but I can't help but feel it misses the aspect of scalability to say "a game should be designed for the ground up to be X" because I should be about to play at 2X or 4X if my computer could handle it too.

Well, I really don't give a shit about framerate unless it fucks with the gameplay somehow, and that's exactly what happens with the title-named ability which has a shitty response window to execute a drift combo, which would be way easier with 60fps. Also the ability is severely underplayed and the narrative is pure bullshit. I thought it was a fun ride anyhow.
