In Europe during the Middle ages (and right up until the 20th century), there was no "social safety net." You caught a disease, you caught the plague, you depended on the Church or orders who dedicated their lives to such things.

All the Reformation led to was terrible infighting among christians when the turk was in many cases literally at the gate. The Catholic church's genius was in its ability to organize and keep elements dangerous to the populace away.
