How the hell did capitalism survive the Great Depression?

How the hell did capitalism survive the Great Depression?

Ww2
Don't let the Keynesians fool you
Even Keynes realized quantitative easing and increased government spending wasn't working

High taxation of the rich and job stimulation saved the economy.

Why exactly did the war make things better?

Could it be argued that the transport of so many young men to Europe and the Pacific killed any revolutionary potential among American communist groups?

CPUSA had a pretty decent membership in the 40s

It destroyed constant capital.

It didn't for most of Europe, obviously, since huge swaths of it were in ruins. For the United States though it was perfect. During the war of course demand for work spiked in defense industries, especially with so many men going into the military. This on its own was not enough though, which is why after the war it started to look as though we'd just go slide right back into a depression. That devastation in Europe proved to be a great boon though, as it gave the US access to huge markets hitherto less accessible because they had large scale domestic industry of their own. After the war though European industry was in shambles, while American industry went entirely untouched during the war and was able to step into the void.

Why did Communism fall to Jello Pudding Pops?

War and Keynes

I like Keynes but fuck him at the same time

A more plausible explanation would be the beginnings of the Cold War and the intensifying of state repression of American communists that went with it, along with the increased prosperity seen by many Americans in the post-war period.

Because it works.

R E E E E E E E f o r m s

war, bucko

(CPUSA has always been shit, regardless)

Fuck you say?

The party in the 30s and 40s was pretty dope

Fascism, ww2, McCarthyism, high income taxes, nationalism… Just everything until the 70s

None of these answer the question. The depression lasted unabated for like a decade. Why didn't revolution happen?

Read Bookchin

They were helped by this fella's utter incompetence and his control over Socialistic parties all around the world.

Socdem reforms and FDR.
Also sectarianism and splits within American Communist parties (thanks Trotsky).

I forgot to mention social security. That's pretty huge for proles

Is burning crops keynesian?

...

How? Because it was Stalinist before it was liberal?

War.
War never changes.

When capitalism overproduces and production needs to be destroyed you dump it to keep the prices up … oh .. you mean the last Great Depression..

In a lot of places it did. Sometimes the fascists, backed by liberal powers, suppressed it. Sometimes the revolution, backed by the USSR, worked, although the result in those cases was always a tankie state.

...

the socdem reforms came as a result of the CP's pressure on American politics at the time.

And yet American Communists were never united enough to seriously begin a revolutionary struggle. But yes, fear of communism was enough for the Democrats to push through reforms and stabilize the capitalist economy; WW2 did the rest.

Oh how much different this world could've been
