Even if what happened in the memo was true, the only way Trumps words can be interpreted as an attempt to get Flynn a pass, is by deliberately framing them as such before you read them.
What he said basically amounts to a hope that their baseless farce of an investigation ends quickly, to which Comey himself agreed.

Right there is the framing. Complete distortion to imply that is indeed what Trump tried to do and that Comey consciously ignored it.
Not a word between Comey or Trump to imply it, unless you interpret Comeys agreement there as him also agreeing to end the investigation because Flynn is a good guy, because that had as little implication to provoke this hysteria as Trumps words did.
