Here's my understanding, please correct me if I'm wrong or don't go into enough detail:

Basically Seth was some relatively obscure low-level DNC employee. However, he started noticing issues with the DNC's handling of the 2016 primaries - things like official DNC primary places not correlating with those listed for Hillary, etc. Being a Sanders supporter, he wanted somewhat of a fair primary, but the poor guy expected too much of that hive of scum and villany. So what we can surmise has happened is he accessed a lot of DNC emails and documents and passed them onto Assange / Wikileaks. This material is what the press considers "Russian interference." Not only does this permakill that story, but it sheds light on what happened to him: a cold blood killing, described as "an attempted mugging" despite his watch/phone/wallet all being found on his person and the killing taking place in a fairly well lit area.

The information he gave to Wikileaks is very important; if you remember our digging threads through the DNC leaks, there's plenty of good stuff that several people could see prison time for. With the Trump loyalist part of the government examining this, it's possible we may see some actual convictions and/or the complete collapse of the DNC under its own political baggage. However, there are some things that prevent indictments and arrests from coming tomorrow if not sooner. First on the list is the press pushing the meme that the "family spokesman" is saying the family deny that Seth leaked anything. This spokeman is yet another stooge, however an important one: a democratic crisis PR consultant.

tl;dr: No Seth Rich, no DNC leaks. With the Trump government investigating, those documents are as good as authenticated. And armed with them, Sessions and the rest of the loyal DOJ can pursue prosecution for actual election interference.

If you reach a certain threshold, it triggers a positive feedback loop and only skyrockets in attention (this is what people mean when they say a story reaches "critical mass"). But if you can slow down the spreading of the story and flood it with disinfo to confuse people, you can hold the story off long enough so that people eventually stop caring, it will peter out.
