The PKS' significance is particularly limited by the following points:

Dark Figures
The PKS only contains the so-called Bright Figures - the crimes made known to the police.
Due to missing statistical data, the so-called Dark Figures - the crimes not made known to the police - cannot be depicted in the PKS. Changes in reporting habits of the population, intensity of investigation/pursuit of the police can move the border between Dark and Bright Figures, without the actual scope of the real crime changing.

Influencing Factors
The following possible aspects can influence the development of the numbers in the PKS:
- Reporting behaviour (for instance in regards to insurance)
- Intensity of police controls
- Statistical collection
- Changes to the law itself
- Genuine changes in the crime landscape

The PKS therefore doesn't offer an exact mirror image of the reality on crime, but a - depending on the type of the felony - more or less accurate approximation to reality.

Criteria on collection and assessment
- The assembly of the PKS occurrs primarily based on legal facts and only narrowly cut, even from a criminological standpoint
- Registration occurs with the passing of the process to the prosecution - the topicality of the PKS will therefore be reduced through crimes with a long period of investigation. The duration of investigation leads for example to 24% of the crimes collected in the PKS 2016 to be such crimes, that were already committed in the year 2015
- The PKS is based on the state of knowledge at the end of police investigations. Crimes are, especially because of the different state of investigation, assessed differently than by the prosecution or the courts. Because of this and because of varying periods of investigation, the PKS cannot be compared to statistics on application of 'justice' (for instance conviction statistics).
- The PKS differentiates between German and non-German suspects, but in case of 'German' suspects doesn't take into account a possible migrant background.

Anomaly: "Total Crimes without foreigner-based crimes"
Even in the year 2016, a high number of foreginer-based crimes was collected, that is tied to the migration movement in 2015 and 2016. To enable differentiated statements, a differentiation is made between 'Total Crimes' and 'Total Crimes without foreigner-based crimes'. In the text parts are data, that refer to the reference figure "Total Crimes without foreigner based crimes", in cursive writing and separated through a diagonal slash after the data on "Total Crimes". In the tables, the numbers regarding this are provided separately, or as separate tables and graphics.

Anomaly: "Scam-related Felonies"
The increasing automation in the area of financial transaction and goods trade made a complete revamp of the catalog of felonies necessary, especially in the field of scams and cons.
