I'm reading Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago in English and it's great. I've also read Tolstoy's War and Peace and also had a good time.

There was a load of fuckery until the Russian backed side got back into power. In 2013, the president made some moves reversing the earlier pro-EU policies and kicked off some protests, which quickly snowballed into a revolution due to a general disaffection with the government and quite a lot of western funding. In the end, in large part due to the efforts of actual Ukrainian nationalists, the president fled and they took power.

Of course, the redpilled nationalists who had defended the barricades were quickly outmaneuvered by the better funded "liberals" aka pro-western kikes when it came time to form a government. At the same time, Russia got concerned over the possibility of losing Sevastopol, a major naval base and home of the Black Sea fleet, under lease from Ukraine. So they occupied Crimea with troops from said base and staged a fake ass referendum, as they always do, and annexed the place. Now, granted, the majority of the population there are in fact Russian, and even a fair referendum would probably have resulted in the same outcome. Ukraine was still politically paralyzed, and unable to properly react, so Putin took an opportunistic grab at the eastern mainland part of Ukraine which is also majority Russian. This way he could distract Kiev from Crimea, while also effectively preventing Ukraine joining EU or NATO.

There were attempted seizures of 3 regional capitals - Donetsk, Lugansk and Kharkiv, but the latter was quickly put down. The rebels held out in Donetsk and Lugansk as well as assorted smaller towns and cities for quite a bit longer, and quickly armed up thanks to supplies of men and weapons flowing across the border. Ukraine got btfo a couple of times early in the war, but eventually got their shit in order and started advancing at a steady pace, taking back about 70% of the initially seized territory and cutting the main forces at Donetsk off from resupplies. At this point Russia just rolled in with a couple of tank divisions and restored the front lines to where they had been for most of early 2014. Then it became a slow burning war of attrition and tidying up front lines for better positions on the negotiating table.
