The only reason I'm excited for this re-release is they're porting the challenge rooms from the PS3 version of Bioshock to this new PC version. And it's going to have director's commentary with Ken Levine.

Since you get it for free if you had it on Steam it's a win/win.

How does shit like this happen? Whenever there's 'HD Remakes' nothing ever just…looks right. They always change some sort of texture or lighting and then it ends up looking a someone's Gmod project. Why are those two pillars in the back so bright? Why is Andrew Ryan so thin? Why is the statue clipping through the banner? Why do the bricks look better ten years ago? What's the fucking point?

And I bet you day one this game comes out, they'll be some sort of optimization problem or bug or crash and massive patch to fix all of it. The game's already made! Just like it look nicer!

Most of the time they don't have the source codes to these games, or they're done by different developers.

Most of the staff that worked on Bioshock left Irrational after the game was completed. The developer who made Bioshock 2 folded in 2012. Ken Levine fired most of Infinite's staff a few years ago. This is an entirely different developer porting a game they didn't work on to a new system. So there are bound to be issues that crop up.

Probably not. It's been a trend right now that you can't get the originals of whatever. You can't get the original Baldur's Gates and Icewind Dale anymore because of the remasters. Though you can still buy Doom 3 but that game sucked anyway.

The point I'm trying to make is that there is a trend right now to prevent you from buying the original games and it's starting now. In their place are "HD remasters" that have no point of existing in our current HD world.

It mostly satirizes objectivism yeah. The main character is very based around Ayn Rand and her philosophy.

A lot of the audio logs in the game go into depth about her vision of a utopia wouldn't work if it was actually implemented. I remember there's a really good one from one of the architects of the city who talks about how the pipes around Rapture need to be heated. And if they burst, the entire city can basically flood overnight. And Ryan refused to heat the pipes because it's up to the individual to heat their pipes.

It was just a single piece of storytelling but the game was riddled with examples like this that I really liked.

The game was only ported once, to Mac. The game launched on PS3/360/PC on the same day.

Replacing most lod=0 with lod=-2
Maybe altering sizes to max 4096 or 8192 or 16384. Minimums to multiples of 8.

Change transparency layers to at least 3, try 6 or more.

Composite dynamic lights to 0 or off.

Change DX9 to DX10. OpenGL doesn't work because Epicmegagames are corrupt.

Maintain framerate to 0.

That should be enough. Mass Effect and everything UE3 will look far better from that.

Disable texture compression in the registry or with Ati Tray Tools, all compression. Use HQ settings in the driver. Full AF. And Ati Tray Tools again for wide tent supersampling, as much of that as your hardware can handle, crucial for all games to look good, until TAA is blurier and better. WTSSAA may be incompatible with DX10. Another reason to disregard MS. 360 used DX9. Upgrading DX9 to look and perform better would have been good for everyone including them. Retain that compatibility. WTSSAA is worth the worse shading of DX9. A custom colour profile too that deepens gamma and increases contrast, or whatever you like.

If in XP you could enjoy forcing trilinear in games that don't let you.

Otherwise for UE3 change Bilinear to trilinear wherever in config. Driver can do better AF.

Use the highest quality ambient occlusion.
Use ENBseries, play with it's config file too untill the game looks better than porn.
FXAA or a FXAA injector to clean up textures, especially decals, if wide tent ss aa isn't an option, more blur, no sharpening, highest quality, play with tone mapping, bloom and hdr.

Nvidia Inspector instead of Ati Tray Tools, if you've got a geforce card. Quincunx SSAA, probably isn't available because parasites complained about the effective AA that was used on PS3 games, calling for the performance hit of 2xAA with the same irrelevant effect of it. Quincunx does a great job, regular AA is useless. Textures are blurred, compare Killzone 2 to 3 and 2 looks better, why, because the whole thing is blurred you pieces of sugar free pastry. No banding, all gradients. Geometry looks curved instead of cardboard. The blur diminishes flicker, motion blur should handle the rest.

As long as "remasters" are compatible with nude mods everybody wins. Since the consoles are PCs, they could use the PC version set right. If they want to throw everything into another engine use the best one, native OpenGL so it can be multiplatform without problems and get better with time instead of become incompatible.

Use tesselation, to make things stand out, smooth curves, make details real geometry.
Far more clutter.
No pop in.
60 fps.
DOF at least for the character/weapon while aiming.
HDR/higher colour depth eg 64bit.
More complex effects that make use of gravity/inertia and colide with the rest of the world geometry.
Far more complex water also using "physx" or something similar.
Same for fog.
Animation frames match framerate.
High Quality Ambient Occlussion
"Temporal Anti Aliasing"
A LOWER resolution. Eg 480i. Increase geometry instead of resolution. When people complain show them examples showcasing what the title would look like with a higher resolution costing performance. Then call them stupid.

Models with more complexity, cloth "physx". Hairworks, complex facial animation.

Subsurface scattering.

Voxels for the ground that isn't flat.

More interaction animations eg jumping over something becomes vaulting over it, close to wall has hands or shoulder touch the wall, weapon away from it.
Iron sights line up.
No HUD. Health, mana etc demonstrated in other ways or not at all, powers just more effective when more adam is present, animations for hands using powers are more out of control or vice versa. Character breathes strained to indicate pain or moves differently when injured, no fucking red lens. You know when you're in real trouble when you're stumbling around, crawling, all that "physx" related too.

All characters tethered down with "physx". Their legs match the world exactly in moving, if their fligh plan is altered their trajectory is altered accordingly.

Shotguns do unrealistic position displacement.

Hit animations are combined with physx/havok. See Killzone.

More world ambience, areas made more individual, due to disc size constraints and streaming speed areas weren't as unique as they should be. Should feel megatexture if it isn't. Flaws also accentualted by geometry.

Projectiles have physx. Bounce off surfaces, drop with distace or become less powerful by distance.

More realistic faces and bodies, or impressive ones.

Lower pitched dialogue and no annoying voices. No American that is paid. Find real people off the street. Or people that take their voice seriously and put a lot of emphasis in getting messages accross, understsnding them first without being explained what the meaning is.

Raytracing. Also a reason for lower res.

Interlacing and deinterlacing.

Vertical stretching. Make everything taller.

Environmental action that goes on without you.

More weapons to buy or find. Enough textures for the same model thst each feels unique, or different models for the same tool, eg lose a shotgun the next one looks different but performs the same. This in particular for home made weapons.

More particle effects. More showing 3D space.

More shadows and self shadowing.

Make the environment more of a threat. Shoot the glass and water comes in, accumulates, floods. Careless shots ricochet and water comes pouring in. If passage becomes unpassable then awake in vita chamber ahead with the enemies positioned to attack you, dying multiple times before getting ahead. Vita process should show flaws and should see the body from before, you just a copy. Injuries sustained, cuts, breaks scars not present when coming from the Vita chamber. Or see some things dragging dead to vita chambers. Enemies killed dragged to them too. Returning to an area has enemies weary of you, stalking and acting as groups.

Screen space reflections.
No repeating characters, each with their own voice and attack, like mini bosses.

Non lethal options eg more sneaking at the cost of upgrades and money. No reward for helping. Enemies don't retun to talk to eachother and can track you the entire game. Informing othrr enemies and working with them to trap and attack you. Weapons louder and with more recoil, world quieter after using them.

Should not redo games, they were made for another time and people. Could make somethjng different while attempting to recreate or improve them. Keep making things different until it's a completely different game. Should be trying to make it more serious too. More believable and immersive. Also with better lives for the npcs. Don't kill any they go onto do other things, also increasing difficulty with more of them present later. A time mechanic of having to get ahead of them, not just past them. What they go to next might have them do something wrong or you could provide starts so they make a way forward workable.

Swimming and breaking in could be a last resort.

Also needs more of an open world system, of there being a lot to see. Have ways forward more obvious with time, more hints, elimination of other options (dead end ones), a feel of the place collapsing or dangerous. Finally swept to the next area by water, enemies or need. Trapped air dangerous but not as detectable. Candles burn low, fizzle out. Danger gets more intense. Equipment finds it's way to your hands. Speed is required to dominate landscape, battle is between it and it's absence. Harder you go the harder it can. It's rearrangement assists, just not without accnowlegement. Look for ways, ones missed are ongoing with inertia, use that.

In the end the force of the environment is you. It's destructive force is just force that needs to grow and it's growing in a destructive direction in the absence of another one.

Ken Levine didn't work on BS2. He and Irrational passed on doing it to work on Infinite.

If you want to know why watch the making of to 1, his way of directing a game is keeping everything in flux so of course he can't respect the world he's building. Working with somebody elses world forces you to respect the world you're operating in, working on your own world AND the game it's set in lets you throw shit at the wall and see what sticks. That led to the clusterfuck of BSI.
If I were a suit at a publisher I'd let him work at concepts, design documents and prototypes but holy shit, never let him get his hands on something that's supposed to get released. Same as Peter Molyneux.

I changed my post midway and missed that error "and one trading route between Europe and US had become practically unused" which isn't a good sign because that essentially meant imports and exports wasn't happening. since that's the only reason such routes become underutilized that's the worst news that came out of the whole thing. If your wondering what trade routes are I'd like you to take out a map and wonder to yourself how you ship goods across the Ocean then kill yourself.

Yeah, they just took what worked in the first game and improved it and added a daughteru. Tighter combat, better minigames, you get to play as a big daddy, moral choices that actually makes sense… It's funny because Ken in spite of all his ambitions always end up with really dull rudimentary gameplay that's severely dumbed down from what he envisioned. Bioshock 1 was going to simulate an entire ecosystem in the early versions of the game which did sound really interesting on paper but we just ended up with System Shock 2.5
