Before Chavez, extreme poverty in Venezuela was out of control, i've seen upwards of estimates of 40%+ of the population not having even access to water.

Chavez pulls his support from the poor urban workers and rural areas because these people saw insane leaps in standard of living throughout the 00s. World Bank data also confirms this with consumption skyrocketing in Venezuela up to 2008.

Chavez policies were largely successful, the problem is that with 2008 diversification crashed and burned (seen again in WB data) with the GFC and then Chavez kicked the bucket when reforms were needed most and the unpopular Maduro rose to power. The problem is, people would follow Chavez through hell and back, people think Maduro is an incompetent retard, so Maduro is paralyzed by unsustainable policies which are needed to secure support of the poor urban and rural worker.

Maduro is shit, Chavez was not at least by Venezuelan standards, you can see this in the economic data.
