Digimon really is a much better game series, the focus on one partner really helps with getting to know the thing you're forcing to fight for you, not to mention that a Digimon partner can evolve to different forms depending on the way you raise it

I loved digimon as a kid, but it really didn't age well.
Pokemon stayed organized and focused.
What is it about? Collecting pokemon and fighting them.
How do they progress? They evolve. They have up to three stages and possibly a mega.
How many of them are there? Currently 721, not including generation 7, which didn't come out yet.
Digimon constantly tried to add gimmicks too fast to keep it relevant and thus left is a disorganized mess.
What is it about? Usually a grand plot to save this world or the digimon world. Usually both. Maybe even a bonus world.
How do they progress? You evolve them, combine them, even combine with them. Maybe some armor forms, etc. They have four forms (this isn't including the two baby forms) maybe a fifth burst form, or Ultra form. Are they the same thing? I don't know. There are also "Dark Digivolutions". I don't know where they fit in to the whole thing.
How many of them are there? Some say around 1000. I think no one really knows for certain. I think they just add them whenever.
I think only those with the highest degree of aspergers can still make sense of digimon.

2) Literally everyone described it as "Pokemon except X," which never bodes well for something trying to compete with an established thing in the same category

Yeh, feels like digimon is just a hodgepodge of cool concepts some artist made and then loosely strung them together. Alot of the digimon don't even have a clear lineage and are just out there by themselves with no digivolutions to or from.
