My wife and I were tossing around some 4D Chess theories regarding Comey's firing and why Trump would risk letting McCabe, who is way worse and is definitely leaking to the press and is clearly against Trump run the FBI. We both came to the conclusion that the Comey firing was a joint effort by Trump and Comey specifically to get rid of McCabe. If I may explain:

1. After Comey was fired he released simple statement which had is focus being about how "The President can fire the FBI Director whenever and for whatever he wants" and he did it without fighting for the position and complaining about the firing. This solidifies, in the eyes of the public that, according to the FBI Director, the President can fire him; thus it creates a precedent where the President cannot and should not be challenged about his decision.

2. The abrupt method used by Trump to notify Comey of his firing was so "Outlandish" that it forced the event to the front of the news cycle for every network and paper. This made sure that millions of people saw how Comey basically said "It's cool, he's allowed to do this."

3. Now we can all agree Trump my come off as dumb, his actions may confound many of us, but in the end he comes out on top and everyone else comes out looking like the fool. So, why would he risk putting McCabe in a position to really hurt him? Because now he has a way to just simply say "You're fired" to him and he can't do shit. Comey can now get out of dodge for the Clinton's literally having a gun to his head and the heads of his family in order to protect them and Trump can now drain the swamp more effectively. Think about it? If he can do this with Comey, why not do it with those that are against him in the CIA and NSA? He now has precedent to do it and they can't complain.
