For those of you rejoining us, we're right where the last thread left off. For those just now joining us, allow me to bring you up to speed. We're playing a campaign of Rule the Waves, a 1900-1925 naval simulator. We take control of a nation's (in this case Japan) navy and command it into battle, as well as make decisions between turns that influence things such as our budget, our personal prestige and other nations relationship towards glorious Nippon. The game has two halves, a GS-ish screen where we pass turns at one month per turn, and a battle mode where each turn represents one minute.

Now we face a angry but injured Russian Navy in our home waters. What more, with tensions elevated between us and Great Britan, they've moved a section of their fleet into our waters. If anyone required additional information, please request in thread.

It's worth mentioning that those estimates are not for sure what will take place in the battle, just what is generally in the area. For example one of their B's might be in port restocking coal, or a destroyer division might be out on patrol elsewhere.

That ship kind of looks better than ours. We have bigger guns, but he has twice as many, plus torpedos. Probably faster too.

The weather turns bad as night falls and the CL gives us the slip.

In lighter news, we finally figure out 12" guns.


Actually, not so much. 3" are basically only useful against unarmored ships.

With a displacement of 6300? I doubt he's faster. Also to note is he may have more guns, but they're only 3 inch guns, the likes of which would probably tickle our CA.

And AMC I think is an Auxiliary Mine Clearer? They're basically merchant ships with guns slapped on em, which means they're usually unarmoured.

They're effective raiders because they "sneak" up to the merchant boats thinking that he's one of them then they get a rude surprise.

It would appear to be a pair of Russian battleships with a light destroyer escort. We have 4 CAs and 6 DDs armed with torpedo tubes.

We start to take hits, although we do land some in return. Another 3 ships are spotted on the horizon, although we are unable to determine what they are yet. They do seem to be keeping their distance though.

I tried again and it worked this time. I was pretty sure I had the key right last time though.

I'm actually not entirely sure, although I know they do award Victory Points.

The early hit that SAG took gets worse. We've managed to lose the enemy battlegroup and night is approaching. It may be possible to sneak in and destroy our bombardment target under the cover of darkness. Or we can withdraw, taking the 1 for 1 exchange.

We go for a middle ground option, advancing cautiously while using DD to scout out the wings. No enemy ships are spotted and we begin to approach the target.

Cruiser actions are small engagements, usually only a division or two.

How is it possible to make a good rebuild design? Every time I finish mine and try to give the order to rebuild a ship, it says there are no design available even after I just finished a redesign. Are there some elements I cannot change in ships?

Remember that our CA have the same calibre as our B ships so that battle would be closer to 6v4 Battleships than 2v4

Likely a scout. I suggest a cautious approach, don't rush straight at them, wheel closer with their T crossed. It's no great loss if they rejoin the main formation, since light cruisers seem to be terribly unuseful as anything other than convoy raiders by design and won't affect a line battle or kiting gun duel.

While we can't move our destroyers in, our CAs are fast enough to keep pace and whittle the CL down with 10" rounds. After a hit, the CL begins slowing down, likely having suffered a hit to its engine rooms. So far no other enemy ships have been spotted.

As dusk falls, the enemy ship begins to take ever mounting damage and is reduced to 5kts. Our destroyers wait, hoping they'll get a chance to launch torpedoes, but we'll probably just use the CA to keep range from the wounded vessel.

Despite a full torpedo run from the Smug Anime Girls, the CL avoids them all, but sinks soon after.

We now enter a "Destroyer Action", a type of battle I've yet to actually see. At our command is two divisions of Smug Anime Girls. Our opponent seems to have brought alot to the party.

We outnumber them by a ship, but how do we compare qualitatively? Do we have the guns, torps, or armor to set up a line battle, or do we need to try something tricky and wait for a night attack,driving into the midst of them?

I'm going to suggest we retreat on this one. These are our first generation DDs, and are fairly under-gunned compared to the Russian models.

We've broken LoS. It is possible we could come back in a few hours in hopes of a night raid on Port Arthur. Or we could retreat.

Stage a lightning night raid. Only go in long and deep enough to sling torpedoes at everything in sight and then get straight out. Don't get tied up for anything.

Would it be a wise choice to scrap our first generation Smug Anime Girls to make way for a more modern one? Or is the upkeep minimal?

How do I git gud at fleet combat? Currently playing as Italy, already a decade in. I got in a war with France, won some minor territories, then lost those territories in a war with Britain, and now I managed to piss off Germany while the majority of my Battleships are from the beginning of the game. I feel destroyers have more use than AI support that just follows my main group, but attempts to micro to torpedo range usually just ends in pain.

Enemy ships will generally veer away from destroyer lines, fearing torpedoes. You can use this to force them to adjust course, perhaps allowing slower ships to close the distance. As Italy, you can make most of your ships short range, which can let you improve firepower, armor of speed above nations that have colonial obligations.

How are our techs? Where are we deficient, where ought we prioritize? Are we getting to the point where we might be able to theoertically field true battlecruisers able to run-and-gun Russia's BBs with par or better guns & torpedoes, or are they going to be too fragile to risk that kind of action

For some reason, the Arms Limitation treaty seems to have abruptly abandoned. Would we like to build a new, heavily armed Dreadnought? By building in Italian harbors, we can build up to 25,000, and they'll even let us use their secondhand 13" calibre guns.

As long as we can make it reasonably fast and proof it against Russian guns, absolutely. Maybe see how cross-deck fire works on the design, furthermore. I don't imagine we'll have much of any luck against plunging fire, but has their gunnery so far been particularly encouraging?

I should also add the thought that the way gun turret compatibility works, those thirteen inch guns arbitrarily can't be swapped out, so while this ship will get a little obsolete in the long run, it looks like it might make for a pretty decently armed if a bit too thin-skinned battlecruiser further down the line. Once it gets to be too light for engagement in its own weight class, it'll still be a murderous major convoy escort, furthermore. Go for it, Admiral user.

Spend some money on building docks so we can bring our shipbuilding capacity up to par with other nations. Every ship built in foreign dockyards is a disgrace and an insult to the potential and capabilities of the superior Japanese race.

We have an issue we need to face, our rising costs. Our current monthly expenses are at a 5,000,000 shekel negative, quickly eating into the large lump sum we were gifted several months ago. The easiest way to lower expenses is to delay construction efforts, or to mothball active ships.

What, if any, of our currently constructing ships should we put on hold? Note that we have been at war with Russia again for 9 months so far.

This game is the tits. Why does it not have more marketing? I've pretty much only seen it in your thread (which is why I got it).

Just look at the presentation, user. The devs don't care about marketing or making money. They just want to make good video games.

It seems that we have more firepower than the Russians with our abundance of CA's. I say we use this advantage to engage the enemy in pitched battle and sweep him from the field. The skills our sailors and their fighting spirit shall overcome any technological or caliber difference between us and them.

But I care about the year or so I could have been playing this shit (and their other similar games). A little bit of profile-raising doesn't have to hurt the quality of the game or eat into the budget.

For my first game I went Italy/Medium. I'd recommend either that or CSA/Medium.

Our Gen 2 Smug Anime Girls turn ahead of their battle line, intending to force the enemy fleet to either advance into torpedo fire or turn away, thus giving our battle line a short term fire advantage.

That might have been a bad move. We have forced them to react but now we are forced to react in turn. Since this battle is before 1910, our chances of hitting a ship veering away is very low, so the only logical maneuver is to give chase.

Wouldn't they just leave a bunch of mines for us to get bombed by?

I blanked and forgot to take any meaningful screenshots lately. Our fleets break from one another, finally spotting each other at sunset. While in daylight they would be within gun range, at night we lose sight of them. Should we attempt a close range duel, perhaps with risky torpedo running?

Despite a number of close encounters, the battle ends with only one ship sunk, a Gen 1 SAG.

We accept a Cruiser Action, encountering the enemy as dawn begins to fall.

Siphon funds from the Kwantung, those lazy fucks aren't doing any real work anyway.

Our CAs succeed in destroying the enemy ship, a lone CL. However, under the cover of night it manages to launch a torpedo and hit Dub Folded Steel. She survives, but will be out of action for a few months.

It's only going to get better, the Devs have a WW2 expansion in the works it seems (and, from present indications, it's going to be free).

They seem to not want to explode their customer base. They are notably active with their base on their forums and seem to enjoy the small environment that they have going.

Basically, this is how games should be made.
Word of mouth (like this thread) is their marketing.
When it's a good enough game, it will be made known.

How the fuck do you end a battle? I'm on 504/500 mins and this last fucking destroyer is just doing doughnuts and is next to impossible to even hit.

Assuming there's a way to end a battle early will it still count as a loss for me even though I've sunk more?

Can you break LoS? If so do that and it will end if it's past the time limit.

Sail straight and you have to be ahead on them somewhat, scenario A generally won't launch, B should. If the enemy ship is stationary, they should launch in either scenario. Remember to check the division target, torpedo range and where on the ship they are located.

Scroll down, the download link is in the list. It installs the game, then you can use the serial key with it to get patches. It doesn't look safe, but a few people here have tried it and it's okay.
