I think the confederate flag represents a specifically American identity whereas the American flag represents the broad United States. Example, in the US people will fly flags of whatever (shitskin) country they originated to show their heritage but when you're someone who's family has been in the US since 1600s what do you do? Fly the Union Jack? An Irish flag? Most of us have never even been to those places and while we identify ethnically we certainly do not culturally. So I think people with deep American heritage regardless of what side their family fought on should fly the Confederate flag, it's all we have.

You can't wipe out what can be taught. Removing a statue doesn't wipe out history. It merely emboldens us to remember it and pass it to our children.
