Today we have a mildly autistic naval simulator called Rule the Waves. We will take on the role of Grand Admiral of our chosen nation I know you fuckers are going to pick Japan, design and build ships that will be obsolete by the time their construction is completed, make choices in influencing foreign policy and managing naval engagements.

I will follow common consensus rather than "# chooses", although I may make some exceptions. In addition, as many events may occur multiple times or have little impact, I may ask for a general idea of what to do, such as.

We have the base 223 million. We can only "keep" 12 million. Afterwards, we select ships "in construction". These ships will be 50% complete and we will have to pay for the further construction but we will not have to pay for the initial 50%.

The minesweeper is expensive just because it's almost a destroyer. I believe it's better to spend a bit more to give them a fighting chance if they are found than to lose them en masse.

I never thought I would see this day.

I imagine that fleet tactics is king over technological elements at this point, so go for that first. AP projectiles are the second priority, since those are applicable to all guns, which we should put some priority into upgrading, considering how piddly our upper limit is. Fire control is probably good for the same reasons fleet tactics is good, that being likely wide-reaching effects on ships in general, and while I'm not sure armor is terribly useful to prioritize in general, our shipbuilding industry is not good, so we should put some priority on it. Lower casualties means more ships that can be continuously refit Kongo style, which is probably a lot cheaper ingame than new constructions, though I'm not so sure about that in reality.

How are torpedoes, by the by? Our current focus is definitely on catching up in guns, but I wonder if there'd be any use in putting scads of torpedoes on our battlecruisers and future fast battleships.

As for espionage, it'd be wise to allocate that according to our future enemies. If we're going for OTL as a member of the Allies, then snoop around Germany, or Austria-Hungary if our intelligence apparatus isn't so good. Otherwise, if we're going Central Powers, arrange it against our traditional regional enemy, Russia, who have a massive capacity in our home waters albeit no presence, and more importantly against the far more credible long-term threat of Great Britain, who have a very credible Southeast Asian base capacity.

That battleship is disquieting. They have twelve-inch main guns, while we only have 8. That belt armor is also pretty immense. It thoroughly outclasses the Riceball in all relevant respects other than speed, it seems like. We do have more and much better secondary guns, but that'll only matter if we can get into knife fighting range. Makes me lean a bit more towards the torpedo arrangement, furthermore.

Although the decisive battle mindset did not serve the Japanese overly well in WW2 due to the circumstances, here it seems the best option, as the most likely war scenario with our expansionism 30 years ahead of schedule is one with Russia and Great Britain, potentially at once. We will have to destroy them as they come with wolf packs of accurate, maneuverable, and relatively survivable battlecruisers and their upgunned escorts butchering the enemy with close range barrages and torpedo volleys. A long war is neither desirable nor wise to plan around as more than a secondary scenario.

It's…less than a hopeful prospect, Russia has moved it's entire fleet to our waters.

As our fleet attempt to move into position, our destroyer wing jumps the gun and charges directly into port. With the darkness of light, it doesn't become apparent that the entire Russian fleet is at rest here until it's too late. DD Alex is hit below the waterline, while DD Nami move into past her to fire a pair of torpedoes, hitting an enemy battleship.

Our cruisers and battleships are steaming to assist, but they may be too late.

This seems a little more ahistorical than early Japanese interventionism. Oops. Does naval travel time just not exist in any realistic capacity?

It appears that the Russian fleet has slunk into port, clearly not realizing their superiour numbers. Or perhaps they fear the fighting spirit of Japanese sailors. In any case, we take the chance to bombard their coastal battery.

After bombarding the shore, our fleet retreats. However, we encounter Russian ships! This is either an ourputinity to score some early kills, or a scouting party for their fleet.

Our battleship identifies the opposing ship as a cruiser. While Faye attempts to scout out the other, she finds more than she bargained for.

Oh, dear. In the best case, that battleship does seem to be isolated from its support, so we might be able to sink it and the other ships in turn.


Isn't it standard practice for torrenting to have a disposable box with every antivirus one can think to grab for testing these kinds of things? Even more preferably, a closed box that the completed file is deposited into before execution or extraction.

As we surround the Tsesarevich, Faye launches a torpedo. Unfortunately, the battleship moves to avoid it, while also score a series of hits on her.

Now where have I seen this before…

An escort for a battleship is an acceptable loss. If we can strangle out enough of their capital ships, I imagine they'll be forced to accept an armistice, and their own scads of destroyers won't be able to threaten our own capitals due to their obscenely large secondary armament.

Considering there are minesweepers, is there an active mining mechanic? Can we pen the Russians into Port Arthur and attack their shipping & any attempted breakout at leisure?

Thanks to 1900 era gunnery technology, the Russian ship is able to break through into port. However, because of the damage dealt to it, as well at the destruction of the coastal battery, we technically win this battle.


We can set submarines and cruisers to raid enemy shipping. Later tech allows for active mining, which minesweepers counter.

I can't help but notice that Russia has no minesweepers. None.

Can we rush the tech ahead of time? It might be just the thing we need.

While engaging an enemy cruiser, DD Yoko slides up close and drops a torpedo, landing a hit on the enemy cruiser.


Actually, the first thing that got them hating us was that we sunk one of their fishing boats, then told them to deal with it.

With the enemy cruiser sunk, the other two light cruisers get skittish. The battle ends with Japan claiming a warship for a single merchant ship.

Here is our ships currently being built.

Good so far. How's the warscore? Can we get any concessions yet? If not, is it worth trying to press them further, or should we be satisfied with having bloodied Russia's nose and cut before losses? We could, in theory, use our smaller fleet to raid their shipping like they've tried and failed, and unlike Russia, get away with it for being able to maneuver better against their interceptors. And, if we can keep cutting up their fleet in these limited engagements, we'll eliminate them as a strategic priority for the near future, while gaining a far future advantage in tonnage and retrofittable ships. But if they go for a decisive action, the advantage is entirely theirs if they can catch us with their whole battlegroup.

Yep, you can rebuild older ships. You can change their main caliber, secondaries and engines. That's as far as I can remember.

I don't think it's possible to underestimate the Russian Navy's capabilities.

It's kind of bizarre, because we're going after them some four odd years early after they've already sent everything to the Pacific, and they're still getting a run for their money. I don't understand how they haven't penned us in yet.

Yeah, the primary reason the Russians got fucked up so hard was they came into the war with exhausted crew that had to go all the way around Africa, then they met the Japs who were ready for them. Cut that part out of the simulation (which I'm assuming this game doesn't have that level of detail) and you're in for a tougher fight than historically.

Terribly for Russia, because Japan had morale, elan and doctrine with kind-of-par tech, while Russia was turn-of-the-century Russia. Still, we're four years early and our battleships are equipped with 10 inch guns, equivalent to their cruiser primary armaments, and I don't think we've had time to research basic level fleet tactics either. They have more guns, ships, and much better armor, while being slightly underspeed. We do have torpedo parity, if I remember right. You would've thought that we'd get stomped on par numbers let alone so hideously outnumbered, but instead we just keep bleeding them while they rust in Port Arthur.

Ships in a region that does not contain a friednly port do take crew morale losses. However, because our Russo-Japanese war took so long to get going, the Russian fleet was able to spend some time recuperating in port before war actually broke out.


I'll get the strategic map view of it, but we're just barely holding them off of a technical blockade.

In the current battle, DD Fast bugs out, while the cruisers start exchanging shot. Moeship lands a trio of hits with her 10 inches.

Soon afterwards, we manage to pin the Russian cruisers against the coastline. Both ships appear noticeably slower and a fire breaks out on one of them.

The other Russian cruiser begins to sink. However, due to "misunderstood directions", CL Sanic turns back to the doomed ship, running directly into a second enemy group. Loliship and Moeship have to make a decision, do they continue to run down the Light Cruiser they've spotted, or turn to rescue Sanic?

Preservation of our own fleet is the highest priority. We can't keep wolfpacking with no pack. Attempt to relieve the likely doomed Sanic and destroy the cruiser and its escorts. Retreat if the battleship engages.

An attempt to rescue sanic is abandoned as she starts to sink. CL Hispeed arrives, having suffered engine problems hours before. Rather than use her to bolster our forces, we decide to cut and run. We sound a retreat and pray our engines hold up.

As far as I can tell, a second Russian Battleship engaged a merchant convoy, who promptly led it through a minefield.

After the last couple battles, the blockade is neutral. We posses a comparable amount of large ships, while they have a decent swarm of destroyers. In three months we get a whole new wing of Smug Anime Girls.

Shall we continue on, or is there something that I should do beforehand?

I should mention, the "Force in Area" only includes those ships on Active Fleet. Ships regulated to coastal patrol or in dock for repairs are not counted.

How's our tech doing? Just a quick check-over. I assume we're heavy on doctrine & soft buffs, light on straight-up weapons?

While most of our advancements has been stuff like "1% armor weight reduction", we just recently managed to research 11in guns. With Heavy Secondary Battery, we could make a ship focused entirely on fielding high caliber guns, although it would be slow and poorly armored.

Both our armored cruisers are in dock with engine trouble, but in about 2 months our fleet will be bolstered by the new set of Smug Anime Girls.

I doubt river fighting is modeled, so we don't really have a need for a battery ship. Anything we could field of that sort would likely be outranged and outgunned by an equivalent Russian ship in terms of maximum caliber, as well as easy to catch, so the best one could hope for would be 1:1 losses. Still, I very much like the idea of dual-purpose guns for both destroying escorts and providing additional medium range guns against other battleships just as I like pocket ships as escorts, so keeping that at at least medium priority is wise. What are the limitations on secondaries, before and after the research?

What is your experience with this event, if any? All things considered, we are thoroughly trouncing the Russians, and we're soon to have more or less parity in destroyers, giving us a decisive numbers advantage. Gambling on the Army can either cause us no particular trouble, or deliver us a more crushing victory. I'd say go for 2.

The Loliship and Moeship discover an enemy convoy, poorly defended. Just behind them, a wing of destroyers and the sisters Dreamcrusher and Waifucrusher rush to respond.

It seems I spoke too soon. A Russian battleship is spotted on the horizon. What was expected to be a simple convoy raid is shaping up to become a full fledged fleet battle.

Two more Russian battleships are spotted. This is the entirety of the Russian Fleet. If we fight this, it could be the final blow to push them out of our waters, or a comeback for them.

That's a full battleline of Bs and they're ready to shoot on our CAs, if the CAs can, get them out of the pocket, fall back to our Bs and lets fuck these guys up.

I suggest we remain engaged defensively with our escorts. Continually head off the convoy and destroy its ships, while trying to cross the battleships' T and remaining out of range. Should this fail, our escorts will be preserved and our battleships will be able to get into range themselves. Do as much damage as responsibly possible before bringing the light ships back.

While our escorts retreat, Waifu Crusher and Dreamcrusher set up, firing their main guns at the opposing battleships, while their secondaries fire upon the merchant fleet.

I'm worried if we try that without sufficient support from out own Bs we'll simply be letting the Russians have us.

They've already fired a salvo or two as you can see. CHANGE COURSE SAVE OUR CAs!

The Russian fleet seems to want an outright fight, they've placed themselves in from the convoy, denying us easy kills. Although I hate to say it, we're outgunned here, they have a total of 12 12in guns between them, while we have 12 10in. We may be forced to retreat.

There is another possibility, although it's a big risk. Night is quickly approaching, it may be possible to retreat, then reengage under the cover of night, hoping to find the convoy at close range. The risk is, of course, that we'll end up finding the Russian fleet, and be forced into a close quarters battle we don't want.

What are you, some kind a faggot? Go balls deep, and watch as the Ruskies frantically try to fire at your approaching battleships.

On more serious note, how do battles in this game start? Do fleets have a position on the map, and when they come near to each other, a close in battle starts?

Abandon these overbold conceptions. I don't know how many merchant vessels we've sunk or warships we've damaged, but the worst that can happen if we retreat would seemingly be a minor loss, and only in the operational sense. We'll reengage at a later time once our screens are off the production line.

Sort of. Ships are stationed in a region (SE Asia, NE Asia, Indian Ocean, ect). When two nations at war share a region, engagements can occur, ranging from full on Fleet Battles to Destroyer Engagements. To simulate the issues of war, you aren't told exactly what you'll be commanding, just what is in the area and is likely to respond.

Time to bounce. No reason to risk an uneven fight.

Seems like opportunism has been doing better so far than wading into full conflict.

The Russian battleships mismanuever, and our fleet moves in on the convoy, now only guarded by destroyers. Our fleet moves in, tearing the slow merchant ships apart. An enemy destroyer attempt to torpedo Waifu Crusher, and is swiftly dispatched for it's trouble. As the Russian fleet moves to defend it's remaining ships, should we take our leave? We've destroyed half the convoy.


For that battle they got like 220 or so, we got 190.

They must be crushed. The Russians must be reminded they don't belong on the water.

Make sure they have no way of counter-attacking first.

Can we cross them?

Use your discretion. If we have a good chance of sinking anything more, do so. Use our destroyer screens to screen if necessary, as they will have replacements soon enough.

I fail to notice night as it comes, and each fleet loses track of one another.

And as much as it pains me, I think this is the last update. I start a new job in the morning. Are we interested in another session of this or no?

War Update: The Russians have been whittled down to the only the biggest and the smallest parts of their navy. They still maintain a total of 5 active battleships in our waters, as well as 11 destroyers, but only have a single light cruiser. Protests and riots are rumored to have been occurring within Russia.

This is fantastic news, as Russian battleships are incapable of keeping speed with any of our ships, and alone destroyers are easily dispatched with secondary weapons.

Overall, I think the Dub Folded Steel Class Armored Cruiser has been our most successful design. It's fast enough to easily outrun enemy Battleships, while packing enough of a punch to put down anything else reasonably reliably.


We have been enacting a policy of only fighting when we have a clear advantage, working away the Russian support fleet and more or less ignoring the battleships.
We've recently acquired a couple torpedo upgrades, so torps will be a more reliable strategy.


We can design a new B, but it will still be obsolete compared to the Russian designs, and will take a couple years to build.

I don't really see the point then unless we plan on doing mass upgrades later on down the line

Hey OP I downloaded the game but I'm running into some issues. How can I take control of AI fleets during battles? I always end up commanding the cruisers and battleships, but not the destroyers, not to mention sometimes I end up splintering the fleet away from the flagship and they go under AI control without letting me do anything.

I assume you're on rear admirals mode (check preferences). Right click the red flags of a division, uncheck AI control. If a division does not have sight to the flagship, it will revert to AI control.

Sorry for the delay. The S.A.G Mk2 is designed, and fighting breaks out in the Balkans.

While it will take a while, we've also begun to build the next generation of our fleet.

Get rid of the deck armor and the secondary guns. Put as many 6 inchers as possible. Our light cruisers aren't going to be engaging at ranges where plunging fire hits are a possibility. Let's give them as much close-range firepower as possible.

I'm starting to notice a trend that whenever Holla Forums plays a war game as the Japanese, be it HoI, this, or Nobunaga's ambition, Night Attacks always happen and are 99% successful against overwhelming odds.

It's heavily romanticized Warring States age but it has a surprising amount of options available with fluctuating depth between them. Only real negative I can attach to it is the price if you care to buy it and how much of a pain in the ass it is to mod in Commanders.

Considering the position of our ships, wouldn't cut and run just entail heavy losses to us? I'm no naval expert but I figured the Ruskies will get plenty of free shots until we manage to realign ourselfs.

How badly wounded are their BB's then? That's the biggest issue in this fight. If we could realistically take out at least half of them, I'd say it would be worth duking it out. If not, retreat and prepare another ambush for the Cheekies. No doubt their spirit will be high when they see us run.

The fleet moves back in and our DD is able to disengage. CL Hispeed is less fortunate and sinks. With the Russian fleet active, we retreat.

But at the end of the day, we've managed a massive victory.
