I have been in both Bulgaria and Macedonia.

Genetically modern Macedonians are obviously a mix of Bulgarian with Hellenic/Macedonian and even Illyrian. They also have strong Serbian/Yugoslavian influences, especially in their language, which is still closer to Bulgarian.

They might be mainly South Slavs, but they also have mixed with the Natives. And by the way, the Ancient Macedonians were not Spartans or Athenians, they were not complete Hellenics and the Greeks did not regard them as "real" Greeks, until of course they got steamrolled and the Macedonians became even more Hellenized then they already were and great mingling is assumed to have occurred.
