The firms themselves may have not moved production out of country but overseas manufacturing did overtake production of automobiles. Regardless of who did it, this is what naturally happens in capitalist systems. Competition creates an incentive to close plants, employ smaller workforces and automate, which works out to everyone's net detriment in actual practice due to lowered demand and higher unemployment. This is what ruined Detroit.

I should mention that a lot of the firms' efforts in moving plants around were done with the explicit goal of fucking unions in mind.

I am saying that protectionism is not the fucking problem. How does protectionism stop automation? One of the biggest causes for the loss of jobs over the past 80 years has been the rise of automation, and the fact that only a select few people benefit from productivity increases due to automation. Less working people getting money means less working people spending money means less profits, which means closing plants and layoffs. This causes a situation where all the rich people who benefited from automation are afraid to spend their giant piles of cash, because they only spend it into things that make a profit and nothing is making a profit, so jobs decline and the situation spirals out of control. This is why recessions happen. Protectionism does JACK SHIT to address this.
